Over the weekend, The Guardian reported that schools and councils across England are expecting the proportion of children with Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans to double to one in 10, with families rushing to secure support for their children ahead of potential changes to the SEND system under the Government's proposed reforms.

As IPSEA’s Chief Executive, Madeleine Cassidy, said: “The government’s proposed SEND reforms risk making an already fragile system worse by removing the statutory protections and vital safeguards available to children and families when support is delayed, denied or inadequate.”

Children, young people and families need stronger protections, not fewer. Any reform of the SEND system must ensure that children’s rights are protected, and that families have meaningful safeguards to access necessary support.

Remember to sign the petition 'Protect legal right to support for children with SEND': https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/764268

Together, we can stand up for the legal rights and protections that children and families rely on.

September is FASD Awareness Month.

This month National FASD joins with our sister organisations in the FASD UK Alliance with a focus on and to highlight that children with FASD become adults with FASD and they have a right to lifelong FASD-informed support.

Up to 2.8 million people in the UK may have FASD. Most have never been told. There is no adult FASD pathway in most of the country, so people reach 18 and simply disappear from view — still living with a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition, now with nothing behind them.

FASD grows up. Support has to last a lifetime.

If you know that already, share this so someone else learns it today.
