✨️Feeding constantly but baby is still unsettled? Let's take a deeper look ✨️
⏰️If you are feeding your baby around the clock and they still seem fussy, frustrated, or completely unsettled between feeds, it's usually a sign that your baby is working too hard to get the milk they need.
🌍We need to look at the whole picture. When a baby is constantly on the breast or bottle but never seems satisfied, we dive into 5 core areas to find the root cause:
🤱 1. Milk Supply vs. Transfer
It’s easy to wonder, "Do I have enough milk?" But often, the supply is there—baby just can't transfer it efficiently. If they are only getting small amounts at a time, they will need to feed constantly just to top up.
👅 2. Oral Dysfunction (Like Tongue-Tie)
To feed efficiently, a baby needs to drop their jaw, elevate their tongue, and create a deep vacuum. If a tongue-tie or tight oral tissue restricts that movement, they can't drain the breast or seal around the teat properly. They swallow air, slip off the latch, and get tired before they get full.
🧘 3. Physical Tension
Birth is hard work! Tightness in the jaw, neck, or shoulders (often from their position in the womb or a tricky delivery) can make opening wide or turning their head uncomfortable. A tense baby is an unsettled feeder.
🧠 4. The Nervous System
If a baby is in a state of high alert or "fight or flight" due to stress, overstimulation, or physical discomfort, their digestion slows down. This can make them seek the breast or bottle purely for regulation and comfort, even if their tummy is physically full.
🌱 5. Gut Health & Wind
When oral dysfunction or a poor latch causes a baby to gulp down air, it leads to trapped wind, bloating, and reflux symptoms.
