Now is the time to make some noise for DLD (Developmental Language Disorder)!
DLD is a difference in how the brain processes words and sentences. And it impacts on learning, work and relationships. It is very common. With around 2 in every 30 people having it. But most people have never heard of it!
That needs to change!
But we need your help. You can:

1 Keyboard warriors: share our posts like crazy.
2 Creatives: paint, sing and get crafty. And share posts of your creations
3 Storytellers: tell others about your experience of DLD. Post it on your socials or directly to us: https://radld.org/news/tell-us-your-story/
4 Party people: dress up in purple and yellow and celebrate
5 Photographers: take photos of the light up events: https://radld.org/dld-awareness-day/light-up-events/ or any other activities you encounter. Share those too.

As Children's Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists we recognise the importance of mental health and wellbeing for children, young people, families, and the professionals who support them.

Taking care of our mental health is just as important as looking after our physical health.

This World Mental Health Day, we encourage everyone to take a moment to check in with themselves and others. A simple conversation, a listening ear or a small act of kindness can make a big difference.

It will be DLD day on the 16th October 2026. How will you celebrate it this year and raise awareness?

DLD is when someone has difficulties with understanding spoken language, and difficulties with talking.
1 in 14 people have it.
It is a hidden disability that not many people know about.
It is a lifelong challenge.
Adults can have DLD as well.

We want to help children and adults with DLD get the right support so they can make great progress and do all the things they want to do in life.

See this poster from the RADLD charity. This poster was made by Frankie Boyle, a famous artist with DLD.

Please put up this poster wherever you can (with permission) to raise awareness of DLD in Barnsley.

DLD day is coming up on 16th October.

DLD (Developmental Language Disorder) is a difficulty understanding what people are saying, as well as difficulties with talking in words/sentences.

2 children in every classroom of 30 have DLD, but not many people know about DLD and what helps.

The 'DLD bubble Toolkit' is a great resource for school staff to use so they can:
-Learn more about DLD
-Make their classrooms communication friendly
-Learn what strategies helps the child/young person with DLD
