We are incredibly proud to announce that WorkWell South Cumbria, in close partnership with Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board, is delivering a brand-new pilot pathway focused on fit note reform.
Traditionally, a fit note has often been seen as a simple sign-off from work. Through this innovative pilot, we are shifting the focus from what people can’t do to what they can do with the right support.
By integrating our specialised Work & Health coaching directly into the system, we are helping patients, GPs, and employers have better, earlier conversations about workplace adjustments and phased returns.
What does this mean for Barrow?
• For Individuals: Faster access to our free, voluntary programme before long-term sickness absence sets in. We support you to create a practical plan to stay in or return to the job you love.
• For GPs & Primary Care: A trusted, direct pathway to refer patients who need practical employment support, freeing up valuable clinical time.
• For Employers: Better guidance on how to implement reasonable adjustments, retain skilled staff, and foster a healthier, more supportive workplace.
Health and employment are deeply linked. By reforming how we approach fit notes, we are building a more resilient workforce and a healthier community across Barrow and our wider community.
