While millions celebrate or commiserate during the World Cup, thousands of people face a much more sinister kind of "kick-off" at home.

While football itself does not cause domestic abuse, major tournaments act as a catalyst for existing abuse to escalate severely.

To highlight this, Women's Aid has launched “The Other Kick Off” campaign—shining a light on late-night hours when abusers return home and violence is predicted to spike.
🚨 Incidents of domestic violence rise by 38% when England lose.
🚨 Incidents rise by 26% even when England win or draw.
🚨 Alcohol-related abuse climbs by 47% on the day of an England victory.

Football should be a game of joy, but for many in our local communities, it is a time of fear. Here at WorkWell South Cumbria, we believe that workplaces, colleagues, and neighbours must look out for one another and break the silence surrounding match-day violence.

If you or someone you know in our area is dreading the final whistle, you are not alone. Tailored, confidential support is available right here in Westmorland and Furness:

We are incredibly proud to announce that WorkWell South Cumbria, in close partnership with Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board, is delivering a brand-new pilot pathway focused on fit note reform.

Traditionally, a fit note has often been seen as a simple sign-off from work. Through this innovative pilot, we are shifting the focus from what people can’t do to what they can do with the right support.

By integrating our specialised Work & Health coaching directly into the system, we are helping patients, GPs, and employers have better, earlier conversations about workplace adjustments and phased returns.

What does this mean for Barrow?
• For Individuals: Faster access to our free, voluntary programme before long-term sickness absence sets in. We support you to create a practical plan to stay in or return to the job you love.
• For GPs & Primary Care: A trusted, direct pathway to refer patients who need practical employment support, freeing up valuable clinical time.
• For Employers: Better guidance on how to implement reasonable adjustments, retain skilled staff, and foster a healthier, more supportive workplace.
Health and employment are deeply linked. By reforming how we approach fit notes, we are building a more resilient workforce and a healthier community across Barrow and our wider community.
🤝 Are you a local employer or healthcare provider wanting to know how this pilot impacts your team or practice?
