This summer will mark Ebony Squid Studio’s 6th birthday! 🦑 But our current studio turned 2 earlier this year… So how does that work?!
We love telling clients our story in the studio, but we’ve never published the full history before. We’ve now mapped out the full ‘squidstory’ and can’t wait to share it with you…
May 2022: whilst settling into their new home together, Lala & Kris were working on ANOTHER new studio! 😵 This one being much closer to their vision and ideas that they were wanting to achieve. It was street level and a lot more accessible for our limited mobility clients.
1st June: Athena officially joins Team Squid as our apprentice! 6 years before, Kris started tattooing Athena and over time, she and her husband Gwyn became good friends. Turns out that Lala and Athena actually went to art school together back in 2007! Athena has always been transparent about wanting to tattoo one day, and we were now in the position to offer the opportunity to her.
August 2022: we took Ebony Squid to the road and set up a double stall at our first convention: 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿❤️ we sold art prints and talked tattoos... La talked to so many people that weekend, that she lost her voice for almost a week afterwards!
December 2022: Lala was able to reconnect with and say goodbye to her mother in an unexpectedly tragic and healing set of circumstances. La & her sister were able to be with her together in her final few days. She passed away peacefully in the early hours with La & Kris by her side. 🕊️🤍

This time last year (2025), La cracked open a bottle of Nozecco (AF Prosecco) to celebrate one of the busiest times of that year 🥂🍾
This year (2026), we are very gratefully swept off our feet again - THANK YOU to every single client who trusts us with their time, their funds, and their body parts 💜

April 2021: Ebony Squid Studio 1.0 was going great, but the potential was maxed out and there wasn’t any room left for growth. La is offered a place somewhere that was the perfect next step on the journey! Kris helps La apply for her first business loan to get her set up in the larger premises.
July 2021: Kris joins Team Squid! They both take a road trip to Scotland to be guest artists at together (then a cheeky mini holiday in the Lake District on the way home). La then feels comfortable enough to work tattoo alongside someone full time again (after nearly 3 years of working solo in her own private studios).
January 2022: New Year’s Eve, while we were looking out at the hundreds of fireworks going off at midnight all over Cardiff and drinking Nosecco (in water bottles haha) standing at the top of Penarth together: Kris proposed to Lala! She said yeah (eventually, after a brief period of shock) and happy cried, a lot 💛✨It’s a custom-made faceted Opal, diamond and white gold engagement ring - Kris created it based on La’s love of Opals and her 2 year silver/crystal sobriety ring that she wears on her other ring finger 💍 it went perfectly with the yellow lightning bolt emoji she got tattooed on my ring finger in 2012 ⚡️to signify La was SO OVER marriage and was married to electric tattooing forever! 🙄😜
February 2022: Kris and La properly move in together! From a tiny 1 bed flat less than the size of a shipping container, to a 3 bedroom maisonette flat! From the town centre to a much quieter area of Penarth 🍃🌳 the same place that they’ve both been living in for over 4 years now. 🏡 all while planning the next major step for Ebony Squid Studio…

Bit too early for the Sunday Scaries?! 😜 Seriously now though, just have fun! But like, don’t have the wrong kind of fun that makes you even less permanent, y’know?
Maybe there’s something about us that is infinite… But sadly, it’s not tattoos. So that’s a relief! That means less anxiety about choosing your next one 🥰

⚠️ We’ve really “ramped up” the accessibility of our studio entrance this week! ⬇️
This year, 2nd September will mark 3 whole years since we signed the lease to this building in Barry, South Wales. It took us 6 months to get the studio ready to work in, including making it wheelchair accessible. We managed this alongside working in and running our other studio, which was based in Cardiff at the time (who remembers the purple place?!) 💜
Our first priority was having an architect map out the potential new bathroom, to see if it was even a viable option to begin with.
Once that was confirmed, we had a builder remove the toilet and sink from the tiny closet bathroom with 4/5 steps (which is now our locked clinical waste/chemical store room!) ☣️
We then had a new bathroom installed that complied with UK accessibility regulations💧🚾
Both the front entrance and bathroom doorway were opened up, with wider frames built in for wheelchair compliant doors 🚪🦽
We had the front doorstep removed and replaced with a sloped entrance, albeit at a steeper incline than we wanted as we weren’t permitted to extend the slope out onto the pavement. We have now adjusted this with a larger folding ramp, that can be installed as required, to create a safer and more comfortable incline ↗️↘️
This studio has been open and available for booking by any body (disabled or otherwise) since 28th February 2024! 💙♿️
In the past 2 years we’ve added little extras - like walking aid holders to the walls, more sensory tools, and more fans and radiators throughout (we also have air con). We’re always open to feedback and learning how to make things more accessible.
Most importantly we would like to say a massive THANK YOU to every one of our clients for their feedback that has helped us make further adjustments to the studio over the past couple years so that our place is more comfortable and accommodating for everyone.

Summer 2020: Lala built her second private studio to better cope with the new COVID-19 regulations and social distancing etc. She named it “Ebony Squid Studio”, to honour her Ebony Squid Club subscribers that helped support her whilst she built this studio, mostly by herself.
Autumn 2020: LALA INKY Tattoos & Art celebrates 3 years sobriety (and shows it off) in her lovely new studio and plant shop! 🪴
Winter 2020: Lala meets up with a newly diagnosed Autistic, sober curious tattoo artist, Chris Morris - who would later become her sober partner in peace, her husband, and Kris Coles Tattoos the co-owner of Ebony Squid Studio!

2019: Ebony Squid Studio began life as a brand name for merchandise, created by LALA INKY Tattoos & Art.
2020: “Ebony Squid” then became “Ebony Squid Club” - Lala’s art subscription service in lockdown.

In the first few years, Ebony Squid didn’t have any reviews available. But in spring 2022, we made a Google business page and 3 years later, we have 100 five star reviews! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
THANK YOU to everyone who has taken the time to write one of these for us, it means the world honestly. No one owes us a good review, and the odd 1 star has cropped up every now and again of course (because although we want to, we can’t please everyone 100% of the time) 🥲
is (and has been for a while) a 5 star studio which feels pretty amazing. We are SO GLAD the good stuff we’re trying to put out is coming back around 💫
Feedback and communication is SO IMPORTANT (if not the most important) process of tattooing, and not just because we’re all Autistic/ADHD. We thrive on details and clarification, because tattooing is literally a special procedure!
