****Gwawr’s Flatholm “swim against sewage” update****

https://gofund.me/06d9962c7

So the swim window is here. We were hoping to swim this coming week any day from Monday to Thursday. At the moment the weather is looking really changeable and so our boat captain is keeping an eye, every day, and keeping us informed. All we can say so far is definitely NOT the first half of the week, but maybe, if things improve (this is Wales and weather changes massively in a few days) then we MAY get to swim this challenge second half of the week. So if you could all please send some positive vibes to the weather gods, for calm winds, we’d be most grateful. It’s very unnerving and stressful, thinking of all the training that’s gone into it, all the kind donations that’s been made, and all the plans that have to change with every day it does or doesn’t go ahead. We have to stay safe out there in the Bristol Channel for up to 5hrs so we absolutely cannot do the swim unless the conditions are manageable.

In the meantime I’ve done a beautiful 3 mile lake swim in North Wales (Bala) to keep the arms moving and body acclimatised to the cold, hoping that we’ll get the “go ahead” this coming week.

Thanks to all those who donated so far we crossed the £1000 mark last week. Thanks so much. 💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪

Hope you all had a good May….. can’t believe we’re on the last day it’s gone so fast!!!

***** an update on Gwawr’s “swim against sewage” from Flatholm Island to Whitmore bay****

So I’m less than two weeks away and the bulk of the training is all done. May was a month of over 55km swimming distance, that’s over 2,200 lengths of a pool. Thankfully I’ve mixed it up and enjoyed some tiring but beautiful swims in the sea in Barry, Barafundle bay, Tenby, a quarry near Bristol and the usual local swimming pool.

I’m as prepared as I can be for the 4-5hr, 12-15km swim (we can’t be sure as it will depend on the current on the day).

Please can we remember that I’m also trying to raise awareness of the problem of sewage dumping in local waters, seas, rivers and lakes, by Welsh Water. In 2025 Welsh Water released sewage more than 100,000 times, for over 813,000 hours in total. Many of these discharges were not after heavy rain, so there is no excuse.

Please watch channel 4’s fantastic drama documentary called “dirty business”.

If you’d like donate to my charity of choice Surfers Against Sewage please click the link below and above. We are at £900 currently raised and would love to get to £1000. Every donation counts. Thanks to everyone that had donated so far. It really helped me train on those days I didn’t feel like it, knowing that I couldn’t go back now thanks to all those donations.

May is skin cancer awareness month, and boy what a sunny end to May. The most important message to get across is PREVENTION.
•slap on some sunscreen (minimum SPF30)
•wear a hat
•get in the shade or cover up in light clothes.
Any, or all of the above will help reduce the risk of developing skin cancer.

For Skin Cancer Awareness Month this May, we share FAQs and tips for how to prevent skin cancer and properly apply sunscreen to stay safe in the sun.

Sun beds expose users to UV radiation & has been driving up the incidence of skin cancers.
The risk of developing skin cancer varies greatly with skin type, but the majority of skin cancers are found in light-skinned people.
