Yet again, an inflammatory marker has been associated with risk for Alzheimer’s: in this case, a blood biomarker, the neutrophil (type of white blood cell associated with inflammation) to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), which is commonly associated with infection and inflammation, identified patients at risk of developing Alzheimer’s. Neutrophils are beginning to be studied for their role in Alzheimer’s, but the more relevant factor may be the underlying insults (such as infections) that caused the neutrophil increase. https://nyulangone.org/news/early-immune-changes-may-signal-increased-risk-alzheimers-dementia

How it works

At your first appointment, you can expect a thorough assessment that looks at the bigger picture, taking the time to understand you or your loved one's medical history, lifestyle, diet, and any factors that may be affecting brain health.

Following this, we will work together to help you move towards your goals—whether that is to help prevent dementia, support slower cognitive decline, or identify potentially reversible factors that may be contributing to memory problems.

On a practical level, we'll discuss food choices, shopping, meal planning, recipes, and supplements. From a nutritional therapy perspective, we'll identify and address underlying imbalances within the body, putting strategies in place to help promote balance and support long-term brain health.

While sorting through old papers in the attic today, I came across some reflections from my student nurse days in 2003.

I was studying for my BSc in Adult Nursing and, as part of a decision-making essay, I reflected on helping patients at mealtimes.

Reading it back more than 20 years later, I was struck by how long it has been that I have been focusing on nutrition.

At the time I wrote:

"I enjoy feeding patients and think it's one of the nicest nursing jobs and one of the most important."

What I had forgotten was how conflicted I felt. While other nurses were busy with the endless tasks that keep a ward running, I remember feeling guilty that I wasn't rushing around alongside them. I wondered whether they thought I had the easiest job in the room.

But I also remember the satisfaction of sitting with a patient, helping them eat, and knowing that this simple act of care was providing something they desperately needed. It felt important then, and it still does now.

Perhaps that's why my journey into nutritional therapy felt so natural. Looking back, my fascination with the role of food in health, healing and recovery didn't start when I retrained. It was already there, quietly taking shape at the bedside of patients many years ago.

I ended that reflection with these words:

"Perhaps it needs to have greater emphasis placed on it and more time allocated to it."

Twenty-two years later, I think exactly the same.

Nutrition matters. It always has.

Have you noticed subtle changes in memory, behaviour, or decision-making — in yourself or someone you love?

It might be nothing.

But it’s worth checking.

Two useful starting points:
• The Cognitive Quotient (CQ) test from Apollo Health. https://www.apollohealthco.com/know-your-cq/
• The Dementia Symptoms Checklist from the Alzheimer’s Society. Access via the Alzheimer's society website.

Don’t ignore the signs your brain might be giving you.

Such a lovely session with this wonderful group of people living with dementia and their carers đź’›

We chatted about delicious foods that support brain health, shared plenty of questions and ideas, and of course enjoyed the amazing smells and tastes from our cooking together! Always a joy to connect through good food and conversation. 🍲🧠✨

I'm always happy to hold a cookery workshop, or a talk in your local organisation.
