https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38963987/ This week the news has been reporting regarding tampons and heavy metal exposure. I've had a read through the paper they are referring to, and it is a USA study but they did also use UK and EU tampons and across the board ALL tampons contain lead and organic tampons seem to be higher in arsenic. Interestingly the levels of cadmium, cobolt and lead were lower in UK tampons vs USA. I can't see any reference to brands etc but named brands vs supermarket own brands seem to have less toxins in their products.

Most alarmingly "In all three government bodies (USA, EU, UK) where we purchased tampons for this study, regulations around tampons are not extensive and do not require regular product testing." The paper goes on to say they are not required to test for harmful chemicals including metals.

It may be time to reconsider your period care? I'll be really interested to see what the tampon companies do about this, particularly the organic ones as the arsenic content is due to the environment the cotton is grown in so I will be interested to see if they can tackle that.

Tampon use is a potential source of metal exposure. We detected all 16 metals in at least one sampled tampon, including some toxic metals like lead that has no "safe" exposure level. I'm part of the team organising the BNA study day again this year and we have pulled together some fantastic speakers - we've really focused on clinical relevance with Kate Knowler talking interpreting blood tests, Louise Carder on environment/mould, Dr Bramati on her specialism of ASD and visceral manipulation, Karina Athwal teaching us about psychoneuroendocrinology and the always brilliant and funny Anita Chakraburrty ending the day with astroherbalism.
