Mothering and The Menopause

Mothering and The Menopause Supporting and empowering Mums with young children through their menopause journey.

Mothering and The Menopause was founded by Emily, an experienced Health Visitor. Emily had a difficult menopause journey herself, following the birth of her twins. Emily is on a mission to support other Mums who are experiencing the menopause to ensure that no one else has to suffer like she did.

Half term as a menopausal mum is basically:
Trying to create magical memories while running on hormones, caffeine and overstimulation 🫠

My 3 survival tips:

1️⃣ Lower the bar.
Not every day needs to be a Pinterest day. A film, snacks and everyone surviving counts as a win.

2️⃣ Build in quiet recovery time.
For them AND you. Half term doesn’t have to mean constant entertainment. Independent play, screens, audiobooks, crafts… use them guilt-free.

3️⃣ Don’t forget your nervous system.
Eat properly. Get outside. Take 10 minutes alone in the car if you need to. Menopause + noise + demands + no routine is a LOT.

And remember:
You’re not failing because you’re exhausted.
You’re parenting through a hormonal rollercoaster while still carrying everyone else.

Solidarity to every peri/meno mum making it through half term one snack request at a time 😂

1. No one should be doing this alone. I knew how important this community was to my sanity before we had our weekend away, but spending time with those ladies who've pulled me through my darkest days just solidified that peer support is an absolute must for anyone going through POI/early menopause, especially with young children

2. There is SO much knowledge out there. Between us we've seen specialists in most areas you could wish to see covering women's health. So much lived experience in things like menopause, fertility, PMDD, pelvic floor health... the list goes on and on

3. Rest can be hard, but it's necessary. All of us have different careers, young children, busy lives and busy schedules. I personally find it hard to stop and relax, but how I didn't leave looking like a prune after hours on end chatting in the hot tub I don't know!

I have learned so much from the ladies within our community, being away together at the weekend really made me realise how much support we give and get from eachother. It felt really natural and like we'd known eachother for years- some of us have, virtually!- but that lived and shared experience really bonds you 🫶🏼

Already planning next year's, can't wait 😍

Yeah me too, nothing like a bit of hormonal imbalance to make you question ever parenting choice you've ever made 🫠

Our Mothering & The Menopause community is filled with women with inspirational stories. This is Kerry's

"My name is Kerry. I am 38 and very fortunate to have two boys aged four and seven. I work for the NHS as a cardiac physiologist. I’m happiest in wellies outside: in my garden where I love to grow flowers and veg or out for a walk in the countryside where I live with my husband and kids."

Lots of women are experiencing hormonal issues without realising it, Kerry said

"The penny finally dropped when I experienced my first hot flush in August 2023. All the jigsaw pieces accumulated over the years combined for me in that moment. It wasn’t fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue or the stress of being a mum. I was going through the menopause!"

"Diagnosis has been a long and drawn out process with many red herrings along the way. The sudden severe dry eyes in my late 20’s wasn’t prolonged contact lense wearing. The hair loss, low mood and inability to concentrate wasn’t actually the stress of losing my mum to cancer. The fatigue and insomnia wasn’t because I was a mum. The complete overwhelm with work tasks I used to do in a jiffy wasn’t because I was juggling working with mothering two boys. The amount of times I was told “this is the reality of being a mum I’m afraid”."

"Managing my own crazy emotions and mood swings as well as those of my little people (who are looking to me to learn how to manage theirs) has been the most challenging part of parenting for me.

To the fellow mum going through it. Reach out and find your tribe to carry you through. I felt so incredibly lonely and confused. Thank goodness for support groups like Mothering and the Menopause. I dread to think where I’d be without those women to vent to and have solidarity with!

On my worst days I wish someone had said “don’t give everything up just yet. One day at a time. Start anew tomorrow”. I left my NHS job of 12 years because I was terrified of hurting someone as my brain fog was so bad. I am now in the process of building up my confidence again in a new job at a new trust. I still struggle sometimes but I’m armed with a much better tool kit these days."

You are flipping brilliant Kerry 🫶🏼

Don't be your own worst enemy while your body is already against you. I made so many excuses for such a long time, and in reality the person it was hurting the most was me!

Ladies ✨️please✨️ commit real time to yourself! I couldn't have seen where I am now 2 years ago through the fog, but I had to make it work for me and my children.

We're here to support you 🫶🏼

Last night we had our members only support call, and here's what went on!

A lot of it was NSFW and what you'd expect from a group of 30 something menopausal mum friends catching up, but some of it was deep & meaningful 🫶🏼

Here are 4 things I recommend you to do if you think you have menopause symptoms.

I must prefix with I am not a health professional, but I have much lived experience of the process and these are all things that I've found along the way, and are widely discussed and recommended.

If you've been through the process, what would you add to someone at the beginning of their journey?
