Pain Awareness Month: Understanding Pain

September is Pain Awareness Month, and the focus of this first week is understanding pain.

At the Bath Centre for Pain Services, we know that living with persistent pain can be confusing, frustrating and often isolating. One of the most important messages from modern pain science is that pain is influenced by many factors, including the nervous system, emotions, stress, sleep and previous experiences.

For Week 1, we're sharing two excellent resources that explain chronic pain in a clear and accessible way:

Understanding pain doesn't make it disappear, but it can be an important step towards managing it more effectively.

Chronic pain is present in 42% of military veterans.
Too often, veterans also experience psychological trauma related to their time in the armed forces.

At BCPS, we believe veterans deserve care that addresses both sides of this coin. We are deeply committed to providing an informed, welcoming, and safe environment for those who have served.

Here is how we support our veteran community:

✅ Interdisciplinary rehabilitation: We combine the approach of physical, psychological and occupational therapies to treat the whole person.

✅ Veteran Aware: Although we are a standard NHS service, we have been welcoming veterans for more than 20 years.

✅ Careful Assessment: Our in-depth online assessments look at physical functioning in everyday life, and mood / trauma history before recommending a treatment path.

If you or a veteran in your life is struggling to manage chronic pain, you do not have to carry it alone.

🌱 The BCPS vegetable patch is thriving and we've recently celebrated our first harvest.

Designed to support people living with chronic pain, the accessible garden has encouraged patients to reconnect with the outdoors, develop new skills, share gardening knowledge and build confidence. Patients have been involved throughout, from planting the vegetables to constructing a handcrafted trellis during therapy sessions.

Seeing the garden flourish with pak choi, tomatoes, pumpkins, squash, rocket and turnips has been a fantastic example of how meaningful activities can support wellbeing, engagement and achievement. 🍅🌱

🍅 As we said goodbye to one of our adult groups last month, one patient left a very welcome mark on the BCPS garden by planting tomatoes. Gardening is really important to him and many of our patients which is why we have this wheelchair-accessible garden space to enable our patients to do valued, meaningful and fun activities

We're looking forward to seeing how they grow over the summer 🍅
