Core Strengthening: Times have changed

There are many more things more important to improving your back pain than bracing it, tightening it and protecting it.

Multiple directions.
Progressive loads.
Metabolic health improvement.
Rest.
Recovery.
Time.

Core strengthening messages are outdated and can re-enforce the old adage that spines need protecting for them to heal.

This isn't true.

Yes, we need the right exercise at the right level and at the right time and that can include these exercises.

But they are not the panacea to your recovery.

Chronic Back Pain: Perspective can be everything

I had this experience with a patient this week and it reminded me..

Across my years of treating complex back pain I've learned that each person has their own perspective of what's going on with their condition

Tapping into that, seeking to learn about the person sitting in front of us is key to adequately re-assuring them so they can move forward in their journey

These Clinics can be complex, but that's what makes this job so enjoyable.

Here's a few cases we have been managing this week.

Not a day goes by where I don't feel I'm challenged in some way.

It's always a privilege to help anyone in MSK Pain, and no matter how chronic there are always ways we can find light in the dark.

No movement is Bad for your Spine
..but not being prepared for a movement can cause a problem.

Single movements are often blamed for injury but when we zoom out it's not always that simple.

The injuries I treat with people often happen at times where they are fatigued, under prepared or overloaded.

Preparing your spine for what you want it to do is the key.

Not avoiding the movement that caused it.

🤕 Neck Pain: It's not so easy to differentiate

🔙 Spinal pathology has it's complexities and neck pain is no different.

Understanding available conditions and differential diagnosis and how they present in practice with experience helps.
..but this is only alongside a structure to the assessment.

Missing either of these components clouds the clinical reasoning process.
