This Volunteers' Week, we're celebrating the incredible volunteers who have helped make the Bath World Heritage Centre such a success.

The Centre recently celebrated its 4th birthday, and it's the perfect opportunity to reflect on the remarkable contribution made by our volunteer team since we opened in May 2021.

Since opening, 98 volunteers have generously given their time and expertise, contributing an incredible 8,807 hours of service. That's an average of almost 90 hours per volunteer.

Their impact goes far beyond the hours they give. Thanks to the dedication of our volunteers, World Heritage Hosts and Supervisors, the Centre has been consistently rated Excellent on TripAdvisor and has won a Silver Award and two consecutive Gold Awards in the Bristol, Bath and Somerset Tourism Awards.

We're also proud that 25 active volunteers have been with us since 2021, helping thousands of visitors discover Bath's World Heritage story.

To every volunteer who has supported the Centre over the last four years, thank you. Your enthusiasm, knowledge and commitment have helped make the Bath World Heritage Centre what it is today.

We’re joining the National Lottery Heritage Fund in celebrating Day, shining a spotlight on all our volunteers and staff who warmly welcome visitors to the Bath World Heritage Centre to discover what makes Bath such a unique place.

The Centre is free to enter and features a host of interactive exhibits and displays designed to inspire and inform. It also provides free information on walking trails and guides to help visitors explore all that our great city has to offer.

We're excited to announce that UNESCO will officially recognise our 200th anniversary on 4 March 2024.

This recognition means that our bicentenary will be included in a worldwide list of anniversaries that UNESCO will be associated with in 2024-2025. Not only is this an immense honour, it will have real-life impact. Working with UNESCO and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, we'll deliver drowning prevention messages globally during 2024. This will help us in our mission to save every one.

Our Chief Executive, Mark Dowie, told us:

‘It is an immense honour for the RNLI’s 200 years of lifesaving to be recognised by an organisation with such global significance as UNESCO.

‘For two centuries, the RNLI has continued to save lives thanks to the commitment of its people – its lifesavers and supporters – and so this recognition is really a tribute to their courage, dependability and generosity, which have made the charity into the world-class lifesaving organisation it is today.

‘It is significant that, in our 200th year, we have this opportunity to amplify the reach of our drowning prevention messages in the UK, Ireland and internationally. Every other minute, someone in the world drowns – this is a shocking fact and one which we are determined to change. This partnership will help us to deliver vital water safety messages worldwide. Our founder, Sir William Hillary, had a truly global vision for a lifesaving service, and this recognition in the RNLI’s 200th year would no doubt make him proud – as it does for all of us who save lives at sea today.’

The partnership builds on UNESCO's acceptance in 2014 of our earliest archive collections into the Memory of the World Register.
