UV levels in the UK are running unusually high for late May, prompting renewed attention to the long-term consequences of ultraviolet exposure. ☀️

At S-Thetics Clinic, this is one of the most important prevention conversations we have with patients.

→ Ultraviolet radiation is the dominant environmental driver of visible skin ageing

→ Photoageing accounts for a significant proportion of what we perceive as facial ageing, including pigmentation, collagen breakdown, uneven texture and fine lines

→ A tan is not protection. The protective effect is minimal, often described as roughly equivalent to SPF 4

→ Melanin offers meaningful but incomplete protection; pigmentation concerns and skin cancers can affect all skin tones

→ UV can pe*****te thin cloud and is not driven by temperature

NHS guidance is clear:

→ Choose SPF 30 or higher

→ Look for at least 4-star UVA protection

→ Apply generously

→ Reapply every two hours when outdoors

→ Seek shade between 11am and 3pm from March to October
