Luisa Whitlock Osteopath & Naturopath

Luisa Whitlock Osteopath & Naturopath Fully registered with 25 years of treating babies, pregnancy, sports injuries, back/neck pain, msk I may also use cranial osteopathy or acupuncture.

Osteopathy is a manual therapy focused on optimizing the body's function by keeping it's structure stable and balanced. Osteopaths are trained to diagnose and treat musculo-skeletal conditions. I look at treating the whole body to find the cause of the problem and not just treating the symptoms. Treatment can include soft tissue massage, joint mobilisations, stretching techniques and manipulation

to promote healing of the joints, muscles, ligaments and enhance the blood and nerve supply to an area.

How can osteopathy help my baby? 👶

🤰Birth may be a natural process but it’s not always easy. The stresses and strains that the baby is put through, especially during traumatic deliveries, can lead to tension and pressure especially around the head and neck area.
Babies can show these problems in the way they find it difficult to move, feed, sleep or digest properly and can make them very unhappy ☹️

🙌 Cranial osteopathy is a gentle approach to treating babies and young children. It works on pressure points and areas of tension in the body that are causing discomfort and allowing them to move, feed, sleep and digest more easily 💆

If you’d like more information on how osteopathy could help your baby, please get in touch 📞

Apparently warmer weather is on its way! 🎉
So for many it will mean a weekend on the garden 👨‍🌾
Here are a few tips to make sure you don’t injure yourself:

🪴 Warm up. Walk around first, get all your tools out and ready, begin with small light tasks. If you start with anything too heavy you will run out of energy quickly and are more likely to pull a muscle.

🪴 Keep changing your activity. Ideally don't spend longer than 30-40mins doing the same task. Repetition, even if not heavy, means you are prone to overuse injuries, especially bad for joints.

🪴 Check your posture. Bend your knees when doing tasks that are low down, sit if the job allows, beware of over reaching or over stretching and keep shifting your position

🪴 Lift smart. Bend your knees as much as you can, keep your back straight, keep the weight close to your body and avoid twisting. Ask for help!

🪴 Listen to your body. An ache is a warning and a pain means stop!

And don’t forget to sit down and enjoy your achievements when you finish ☕️

As we get older, it's easy to focus on the things we can't do as well as we once could.

But healthy ageing is about maintaining the ability to do the things that you enjoy doing the most:
🐕 Walking the dog
🍼 Playing with grandchildren
🪴 Gardening
✈️ Travelling
⛰️ Climbing hills
🛒 Carrying the shopping
🤪 Getting up off the floor without making too many strange noises!

Osteopathy can help keep you flexible, pain-free, advise on how to stay strong and help you continue to do the things you love 🤸🏽‍♀️

☀️ The good thing about all this hot weather is that it’s too hot to do anything!!

🐢 So sometimes the most productive thing you can do is slow down

😎 Rest.
🏝️ Sit in the shade.
📕 Read a book.
🍹 Have a cold drink.
💤 Nap if you need to.

🧊 Your body is already working hard to keep you cool, so don’t feel guilty for taking it easy.
Not every day has to be busy, the housework and garden will still be there next week when it rains 💛

Sometimes ‘not doing anything’ is exactly what you need ☺️

☔️ ➡️ ☀️

Well, in traditional British weather fashion we are going from 13C a few days ago to a balmy 26C plus this weekend! 😮‍💨

As our body hasn’t been given time to acclimatise, it’s important to be safe in the heat:

💦 drink plenty of water, eat foods with high water content like cucumber and watermelon 🍉 (and ice lollies!)

🏃🏻‍♀️ Don’t exercise in the middle of the day, if you want to exercise do it in the morning or evening when it’s cooler

🧴Always wear sunscreen and remember water and sweating will mean it needs to be reapplied often

😎 Wear sunglasses, a hat and cover up if you are prone to prickly heat or have sensitive skin especially between 11am and 3pm

Be safe and have a wonderful Bank Holiday Weekend 🥳

💚This week is Mental Health Awareness Week

💚Your mental health matters just as much as your physical health.

💚This week is a reminder to check in with yourself and with those around you.

A walk outside, a chat with a friend, moving your body, getting enough sleep, or simply slowing down for a moment can all make a difference.

💚 Take action to boost your mental health

Well done to everyone who ran in the Harrold Pit Run or London Marathon this weekend 🥇👏🏻

How are the legs feeling now? 🥴
It’s normal to feel some aching and stiffness after a bout of intense or unaccustomed exercise.
DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) usually occurs 24-48 hours after exercise that your body isn’t used to. It will slowly reduce with stretching, light exercise and hydration ✅

If, however, the pain gets worse, lingers longer than 48hours and is aggravated by exercise, this could indicate an injury and needs a proper assessment ❌

If you are experiencing worsening pain or discomfort, get in touch and let’s get you back to doing the things you love
