🏡📖 Care Home Open Week Milton Ernest Hall Care Home – Discovering the History of Milton Ernest Hall 📖🏡

As part of our first day of Care Home Open Week, we are enjoying a range of exciting activities, and today we took a step back in time to explore the fascinating history of our home and the local area.

Residents spent the afternoon researching the rich heritage of Milton Ernest Hall, learning how the hall was built between 1853 and 1858 by wealthy merchant Benjamin Helps Starey. The hall was designed by renowned architect William Butterfield in the striking Gothic Revival style, featuring steep roofs and beautiful wooden and stone architectural details that can still be admired today.

Along the way, we uncovered some remarkable facts about the hall's past:
✨ The hall was once home to two sons of George V.
✨ During the Second World War, it served as a base for the Special Operations Executive (SOE).
✨ The hall is famously associated with Glenn Miller, who stayed here before departing from RAF Twinwood Farm.
✨ In 1944, the hall became home to the United States Eighth Air Force Service Command, supporting American operations across Britain.
✨ We also learned about the Land Girls of Milton Ernest Village, with accommodation provided for around 40 women working to support the war effort.

The session sparked plenty of memories and conversation, including Peter sharing that he once camped on the grounds as a Boy Scout! ⛺😊

It was wonderful to reflect on the incredible stories connected to our home and to appreciate the important role Milton Ernest Hall has played throughout history.
