Stick At It...

My favourite analogy is that of a stick floating down a stream. I heard it from Michael Neil, I use it in all seminars I do, and it goes like this…

Imagine a stick, floating down a stream.

Along it’s journey, the stick gets trapped between 2 rocks.

It doesn’t need 20 years of therapy to get it on it’s way again, just a gentle nudge here and a little tweak there.

And off it continues, on its way.

It’s the same for us. Many when faced with problems think they are stuck, think they can’t be fixed, the problem can’t be sorted. We can get so engrossed in the problem, and focussing on it, that we can’t see a way out.
We can’t see the solution.

Or if we do, the pull of the problem is so great that it keeps control. And we stay stuck.

But if this is you, always remember.
It is not insurmountable.


Sometimes it’s hard to see the solution, to find the way, when you can’t see a way forward clearly.
But help is closer than you think.

You just need a tweak here, a nudge there, and you’re on your way again.

When in Rome…

Eat the pizza, eat the ice cream.

I’m fortunate to be working out in in Rome for 3 days, and on my first night here I headed across to my favourite place, The Pantheon. Just love it – don’t know what it is but there is something about that place…

Anyway..

I did the typical tourist thing (on my own), a beer or 2, a pizza, and then a double ice cream to finish sitting in the Piazza there.

It’s got to be done sometimes, right?

It’s nice when you can. When there is leeway.

BUT….

Only because I know how to handle it now.
I didn’t in the past – I would eat the above, then repeat. And some more.

And it added up.
Even though I went to the gym.
You can’t out-train a bad diet, as they say.

I consistently kept putting the weight on.
But I kept telling myself it was ok:

“I’m on holiday”
“I’ve earned it”
“I’ll burn it off”
“It’s not that often” etc etc..

It was far from ok. It was destructive. The more I did it, the less I felt in control. I didn’t feel like exercising. And the cycle would repeat.

Until I decided enough was enough. I took a dose of my own medicine.

I took control – took the power back and took charge of what I ate. Until I was where I wanted to be.

I ate what I want, when I wanted…
But said no sometimes too.

Easily. Effortlessly.

Once I knew how.

The right mindset. I got my thinking to work for me with food, rather than against me, as it had been doing.

Today I can balance things out now – and stay where I want to be. So I can have the ‘treats’ – in moderation, special occasions, or if I’ve scheduled them in.

If you are looking to lose weight, or trying to maintain but get tempted too often and you fluctuate too much – if you want to turn things around but don’t know how…

I’ve been there.
I’ve coached people around it.

Successfully.
For 10 years now.

And you know what? The thing that HAS to change first is MINDSET.

'Stressed' spelled backwards..

And it’s a self- perpetuating cycle – it can continue indefinitely.
Which is bad news if on a diet, or looking to lose weight.

But we know how it goes.

Get stressed – eat dessert – feel better.
But only for short time. How long - minutes?

Then what?

The second element to it:
Eat dessert – get stressed

“I shouldn’t have had that"
"I feel bad now"
"I can’t stick to anything"
"I’m just a …" (you fill in the blank..)

Look, I get it. I have a sweet tooth.
But here’s the thing….

Eating dessert doesn’t have to be stressful – have it when you want it.
But be in control of it, don’t let the dessert be the one with the power

What I mean by it having the power is that is you can’t resist it.
Or have it too often
Or eat too much of it when it’s there
Or crave more of it

Out of control.
Powerless.

THAT’s stressful.

So take control.

Yea, yea, I’m focussed…..(but on WHAT??)

Coaching a new client last week, mentioned the value of FOCUS to her.
She said she was.

And she actually was focussed.

But as it turned out, on the wrong things. Which is why she never had lost weight, and always found it so tough.

When we drilled down, this is what she was focussed on…

- I’ve tried everything and nothing has worked.
- I’m probably too old to change now
- I’ve got no willpower, I always fall at the first hurdle

You see, we get more of what we focus on.
Our brain is set up that way, and it doesn’t care if the things we focus on are good for us, or bad for us, it just takes the order and looks to focus on more of that.
........Which compounds the issue.

Which is why, until now, she has never broken through. And changed things.

There’s an easy way out.

Change your focus.
Flip it into the opposite.
And stick with it.

It can be hard, these thoughts are often solid habits that can be hard to break. Without the right tools.

“It’s going to be different this year”, she said

This morning I was sitting in a coffee shop doing some work, and at the next table along 2 ladies were chatting, still in their gym gear. One had her goals sorted for 2020 and seemed super motivated.

Especially around her weight loss.

She said to her friend “it’s going to be different this year”

“I’m going to lose the weight, I’ve booked my holidays and I’m doing it”.

“Great”, her friend said. “How? Are you going to do anything differently then?”

And that’s when the ‘umms’ & ‘errrs’ came into it.

She didn’t have a plan. Plenty of enthusiasm, but no plan.

And usually, when this happens, it all comes crashing down at the first sign of challenge or temptation. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s great that she is so motivated – that’s brilliant. And it will be a good start.

For a while.

And you know what? She might pull it off, but it’s much, much tougher without knowing:

1. What you want
2. Why you want it
3. A plan to get you there

In the early days, it is tough. There will be obstacles. Challenges. Temptations.

Because if it was easy, everybody would be able to do it.

It can be simple, but not easy.
Unless you have the above 3 points sorted.

If you do, great – go for it!!

If not? Well, I can help. We can work together on it.

3 key things for sustained weight loss...

1) Nutrition
2) Exercise
3) Consistency

No revelation there.

It’s easy to eat well for a while (until temptation arises)
It’s easy to start an exercise routine (even if you’ve never done it)

…..But it’s hard to keep consistency.

However, if you nail that? Everything else falls into place.
Small, consistent daily actions to get momentum, build great habits.

It’s tough trying to do it on your own.
Habits are hard to break.
But bad habits can be broken, and good ones created, designed to get you to your goal – where you want to be, what you want to do, how you want to look.

It’s Really Sad that people beat themselves up, talk like $h*t to themselves and feel ashamed.

There is no need.
It’s tiring
Takes time and energy (and focus)

But stresses you
And takes it out of you
You drain yourself

Quite often feel worthless in that department.
Which obviously has knock on effects

For those clients I simply ask:

‘don’t you think it’s time for a change?’

And of course, they’d love to

But they don’t know how to change.
Why would they?

But once you understand simply how your mind works – and apply it – everything changes.

BELIEF.

Brilliant quote – and for weight loss, it’s the most important factor.
With it? You can achieve anything.
Without it? You’ll never do it.

Do you have it? Can you lose the weight?
You might think you don’t have it, you can’t, you’ve tried – etc etc…

But if that was the case – you wouldn’t be reading this now. You have some, maybe a tiny amount, but you hold onto something.

If you alter your belief about what’s possible for you and weight loss, if you hike it up, and you’re consistent with it, YOU CAN DO IT.

It needs focus, a plan, repetition – but it’s just a pattern of thinking - like not believing you can do it, only better ;0)

And BELIEF is EASY TO ACHIEVE.
