I've used prescription skincare consistently for around 7 years now...and I still have underlying, deeper pigment in my skin. That's why I had a Moxi laser treatment in clinic this week, to target exactly that.

People tell me all the time how "glowy" and "perfect" my skin looks... but that's usually when I've got a full face of makeup on for clinic!! I know I sound like a broken record, but no one's skin is perfect. Everyone has pores and texture...and if someone's doesn't on social media, they're using filters.

That said, prescription skincare - tretinoin, sometimes combined with hydroquinone - is genuinely the best topical option for the "glass skin" everyone's chasing right now. It's also the only topical approach with real evidence behind it for anti-aging . But a couple of times a year, I still like a bit of extra help from a laser to shift the pigment that skincare alone can't touch.

I haven't worn makeup since my Moxi on Monday, and the number of people who've told me I look tired... I am tired! But it's also just real skin - dark circles included, usually hidden under concealer.

Tretinoin doesn’t have to be all or nothing!

One of the best things about tretinoin is that we can tailor how you use it to suit different areas of your skin.

The skin around the eyes and on the neck is thinner and often more sensitive, so a simple trick is to mix your tretinoin with a fragrance-free moisturiser before applying it to these areas. This effectively “buffers” the tretinoin, making it gentler and easier to tolerate while still allowing you to benefit from it.

And if you’re ever unsure about how much to use, how often to apply it, or what to do if your skin becomes irritated, just ask us!

That’s a big part of what makes Dr Storm different. You’re not left trying to figure it out from a website or an automated response. There is always an actual human here to help you get the most from your treatment!!

I’ve been there... postpartum, dealing with pigmentation, breakouts, and just feeling rubbish about my skin.

And it really can affect how you feel. When you don’t feel comfortable in your skin, it can affect your confidence more than people realise.

I tried all the fancy serums, the expensive skincare and the products making huge promises. None of them worked...

Tretinoin did.

It’s the only topical skincare ingredients with decades of medical evidence behind it for acne, pigmentation, skin texture and photoageing. I’ve read the research, I understand the science, and it’s why I’m such a believer in evidence-based skincare rather than chasing the next trend.

It’s about using the right treatment, consistently, and giving it time.

Let's talk magnifying mirrors...

I would be lying if I said I don't do it too...any time I'm staying in a hotel it's the first thing I look into...but here's the thing...those things are lying to you! They show you a version of your skin that literally no one, including you in real life, ever sees. Pores under 10x magnification look like craters. A bit of redness looks like a full-blown rash. One spot looks like ten. It's not an accurate reflection of your skin!

And then there's Instagram. The filters, the ring lights, the "glass skin" trend that makes it seem like poreless, perfectly even, reflective skin is something real people wake up with. It's not. Glass skin as you see it online is lighting + editing + filters, not biology. Actual human skin, even the skin of the person whose glowy selfie you're scrolling past, has texture, pores, and variation in tone. That's not a flaw. That's just skin.

Here's what I you to realise...
✨ Pores are normal, they're a part of your skin's structure, not a problem to solve
✨ A bit of redness happens to almost everyone
✨ The odd spot doesn't mean your skincare routine has failed
✨ "Flawless" skin, as it's marketed to you, isn't a realistic standard, it's a filter

Skincare should be about health, not chasing a version of yourself that doesn't exist outside of an app. So next time you catch yourself squinting into a 10x mirror or comparing your bare face to someone's filtered selfie....put the mirror down and remember real skin has texture!! That's not something to fix. That's just what skin looks like.

Are you over-cleansing your skin?

It's widely taught “clean” skin is the foundation of a good skincare routine, but sometimes doing less can actually be better for your skin barrier!

Here are a few cleansing habits I think are worth reconsidering...

Your AM cleanse is unnecessary
For many people, particularly those with dry or sensitive skin, there’s no real need to cleanse again first thing in the morning. Your skin hasn’t accumulated the same sweat, pollution, SPF and makeup that it has by the end of the day. A splash of lukewarm water may be all you need before applying your morning skincare.

Keep your face away from hot shower water
Hot water can strip the skin of its natural oils and worsen dryness and irritation. Always use lukewarm water on your face and, ideally, avoid washing your face directly under the shower. The combination of hotter water, pressure and prolonged exposure isn’t doing your skin barrier any favours!

Dry skin? Try this before showering
Apply a thin layer of an ointment-based moisturiser like the dr storm night moisturiser or Vaseline before getting into the shower. This creates an occlusive barrier that can help reduce water loss and protect very dry or compromised skin.

Micellar water isn’t necessarily the problem - how you use it might be
Repeatedly rubbing the skin with cotton pads until they come away completely clean can cause unnecessary friction and irritation. If your skin feels tight, dry or sore afterwards, look at your technique as well as the product itself. Gentle is the goal!

And what about acids in cleansers?
I’m generally not a fan. Ingredients such as salicylic acid need sufficient contact with the skin to exert their effect. In a cleanser that’s applied and rinsed away shortly afterwards, that contact time is limited. Exfoliating cleansers often contribute to dryness or irritation.

Cleansing shouldn’t leave your skin feeling squeaky clean, tight or stripped. Your skin barrier is there for a reason...treat it gently.
