Hidden deep within the old forest, the Evergreen Witch’s Cottage looks as though it has been standing amongst the trees for generations.

Its crooked Gothic roof is covered in dark green, scale-like tiles, while twisting roots and vines appear to grow around the cottage itself. Curved roof peaks, a tiny stone chimney and tall arched windows give it that wonderful storybook witch’s-home appearance.

Switch on the internal LED lights and the windows glow a rich amber, completely changing the cottage after dark. Tucked amongst books, herbs and curios, placed on a witchy altar or displayed on its own, it creates the feeling of a tiny inhabited cottage glowing somewhere deep in the woods.

It’s about what you need the ingredient to actually do in the working.

The same herb, resin or other ingredient can have a completely different practical role depending on how it is prepared. Crushing something releases its scent and oils. Burning turns it into smoke. Steeping transfers some of its soluble compounds into water. Carrying keeps the material physically with you, while burying places it somewhere specific or disposes of it as part of the working.

So when an old spell tells you to crush, burn, steep, bury or carry something, the method isn’t necessarily just decoration. It can determine how the ingredient functions in the spell.

🐦‍⬛ 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞, 𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞:

*Crushed to release its aromatic oils before adding it to a charm, sachet or mixture.

* Kept whole when the physical plant itself is meant to remain part of a bundle, charm or arrangement.

* Burned when smoke and fragrance are the intended part of the working.

* Steeped when making a liquid preparation such as a wash. Not every plant is safe for skin contact or ingestion.

* Carried when the ingredient is being used as a personal charm or amulet.

* Buried when the working specifically calls for placing or disposing of the material in the earth. Historically, where something was deposited could matter too; burial was not simply a universal way of “releasing a spell.”

That’s why simply knowing “rosemary is used for protection” only tells you part of the story. What you do with the rosemary matters just as much as why you chose it.

And there isn’t one universal rule saying crushed always means one thing, burned always means another, or buried always means something else. Different traditions and individual workings used materials differently. The instructions of the particular practice matter.

A little bit eerie, a little bit adorable… and definitely made for those of us who prefer our fairies on the darker side.

Stitchy Belle is part of The Stitchlings collection, a series of wonderfully strange little gothic characters inspired by stitched dolls and dark fairy tales.

She sits upon a spool of black thread with her needle in hand, surrounded by all the tiny details that make her so unusual, button eyes, visible stitches, patched fairy wings, a purple dress and pins tucked into her long braided hair.

She is made from polyresin and individually hand-painted, standing at approximately 11 cm tall.

She isn’t a traditional Magickal poppet or ritual doll, she’s a piece of gothic fantasy art, created for collectors and lovers of the beautifully peculiar.

September arrives quietly. The evenings begin to draw in, the air changes, and the land starts moving towards autumn.

On the Wheel of the Year, Mabon marks the autumn equinox, when day and night are approximately equal in length. In the Northern Hemisphere, the September equinox falls on 23 September in 2026.

It is a natural turning point in the year. The harvest season is underway, fruits are ripening, seeds are being gathered, and the darker half of the year is drawing closer.

For witches today, this can be a beautiful time to take stock of what has grown in our lives, appreciate what has come to fruition, and decide what we no longer need to carry into the months ahead.

So as September begins, there is no need to rush the season.

Watch the land.
Notice the changing light.
Gather what is ready.
Finish what needs finishing.

September arrives quietly in Ireland.

The light begins to change. The evenings draw in. The hedgerows are heavy with berries and the trees begin the slow work of letting go.

There is something worth remembering in that.

Nature doesn’t cling to what has finished. She keeps what she needs, releases what she doesn’t, and turns towards the next season without apology.

September is a good month to do the same.

Inspired by old Irish May Morning customs in which dew gathered before sunrise was prized for beauty, luck, favour and increase.

May Morning Wash is a drawing wash. It is used to bring attention, charm, opportunity and favourable notice towards the witch.

🐦‍⬛ 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐔𝐬𝐞:
Use as part of a ritual bath or shower before glamour, attraction, favour or success work. Wash towards yourself while naming what you are drawing in.

For mirror work, place a little in a ritual bowl beside your mirror. Work from the outer edge inward towards your reflection while speaking the qualities you wish others to notice.

For favour work, write your name in the centre of a petition with the desired outcome around it, then draw the Wash inward towards your name.

Especially powerful for May Day and May Morning workings.

Not seeing an immediate result does not automatically mean your spell needs to be done again.

Some workings are performed once. Others are deliberately repeated over several days or require an action to be repeated a specific number of times. Follow the method of the working you are actually doing.

If you have completed a spell that was intended to be done once, don’t keep repeating it simply because you’re impatient or worried that it hasn’t worked yet.

𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞.

If nothing changes, look at the working before automatically doing it again. Was your spell clear? Have the circumstances changed? Would a different working now make more sense?

Most importantly, there is no universal rule in witchcraft that every spell must work within 3 days, 7 days or one lunar cycle.

Different workings have different methods.

Knowing how to cast is important.

Knowing when to leave your Magick alone is just as important.
