One of our Inclusion Works Southeastern participants; Emily has recently participated in a Supported Placement within the Northern Ireland Assembly. Emily wanted to expand her knowledge of all things administration, and with support from Cedar’s Inclusion Works service, Emily applied for the opportunity through an NIUSE Expression of Interest form.

"I really enjoyed the time I spent in Stormont for work experience. It was very interesting being able to have a behind the scenes insight into what goes on within its walls and being able to understand the important role the Examiner of Statutory Rules department have in ensuring things run smoothly."

The administrative placement was one day per week, for a 5-week period within the Office of the Examiner of Statutory Rules. Whilst on placement, Emily contributed to planning and managing the work of the office through calendar management, assisting with emails, record keeping and organising ,as well as using and updating spreadsheets.

Cedar IW case officer, Shannen Donnelly was “delighted that Emily got the opportunity to spend 5 weeks at the NI assembly and now has first-hand experience in an administrative role and what this entails. Emily applied herself and made the most of this opportunity, developing knowledge and skills that will be invaluable when applying for paid employment”

Emily’s time with the NI Assembly has given her first-hand experience within an administration position, something she can take forward into potential roles in the future.

Our pre-employment service, Inclusion Works, supports disabled people in developing the skills to work, learn, and engage in the community, enhancing their health and wellbeing. We offer pre-employment support, helping individuals create a plan for training and work goals, while also empowering individuals to engage independently in their communities.

Every week our Arrow group are knocking it out of the park with their creativity and this one is no different! The participants of the Arrow group in Newry dabbled in designing their own cheese boards. Provided with tray and armed with some paints and pens, they let their creativity flow and created some excellent additions to their homes with these delightful cherry-shaped cheese boards.

ARROW is a service supporting people with Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) across the Southern Health and Social Care Trust. We provide practical support, develop social skills and connections in their community by attending our local community groups.

For ABI Week, we're sharing the stories of our Connections group in Omagh, which meets weekly to catch up on the gossip over a tea or coffee, and to give some new activities a go. Recently the group have enjoyed chair yoga, creating art using natural materials and inks and worked with clay to create wall hanging vases.

The group have been together a long time and have forged strong connections and friendships. Their catch up once a week is a highlight for some, as it is their only break from the isolation of being at home.

Future activities planned involve some more explorative arts and craft, as well as mental and physical health programmes facilitated by external agencies such as Action Mental Health and the Western Trust.

For ABI Week, our Cedar Connections Foyle ABI group came together for a photograph emphasising their support for one another and their commitment to overcoming isolation. Standing side by side, the group photo reflects the power of connection, friendship, and shared understanding.

Featured in the moment is Nicola Roulston, Cedar Advocate, who joined the group to deliver a session on the “5 Steps to Wellbeing,” offering practical ways to nurture mental and emotional health. For Brain Injury Awareness Week, the group proudly shares how talking, listening, and connecting can make a meaningful difference in building confidence and a sense of belonging.

As part of this year’s ABI Week theme highlighting the impact of isolation after brain injury, staff from Cedar Foundation’s Living Options services at Hillmount Close, Hillmount Court and Ardkeen recently took part in specialist Level 3 Brain Injury training. This training strengthens staff knowledge and understanding of the unique challenges faced by people living with acquired brain injury, helping teams deliver more person-centred support, promote independence, and create meaningful opportunities for connection, inclusion and quality of life for the individuals they support every day.

“we had a really positive morning delivering the training to the team at our South Belfast supported living services. It was a good chance to discuss with them strategies that they can support their tenants in developing to be able to live full lives after brain injury and to hear about the great work they are doing.” Anne Woods - Director of People and organsiational development.

One participant commented
"excellent training session, the training was insightful, informative, clear communication, was engaging, the practical's helped get everyone involved, successfully improved staffs confidence and understanding of a brain injury".
