Why am I a good counsellor?

I sometimes find this a difficult question to answer.

Not because I don’t believe in what I do, but because being a good counsellor isn’t really about having all the right words, giving great advice or having a clever answer for everything.

For me, it’s about being able to sit alongside someone when life feels messy, frightening, confusing or just… too much.

I think I’m a good counsellor because I’m genuinely curious about people. I don’t expect you to fit neatly into a box, and I won’t judge you for the things you find difficult.

I bring together different ways of working, including person-centred therapy, CBT, psychodynamic approaches, Compassion Focused Therapy and ACT. But I don’t believe therapy should feel like you’re being given a textbook treatment plan.

You’re a person, not a diagnosis.

Sometimes we might talk. Sometimes we might gently challenge an unhelpful thought. Sometimes we might explore where something has come from. And sometimes a bit of creativity, mindfulness or simply having space to breathe can be more helpful than another conversation.

I’m also very human. I don’t sit on the other side of the room pretending I’ve got life completely figured out. I know that being human can be complicated. I know what it’s like to struggle, to overthink, to doubt yourself and to wonder whether things can actually change.

And perhaps most importantly, I really care about the people I work with. My aim isn’t to “fix” you.

It’s to help you understand yourself a little more, be kinder to yourself, feel more able to cope with life’s difficult bits and, ultimately, feel more like you again.

So perhaps that’s why I think I’m a good counsellor.

Not because I have all the answers. But because I’m willing to sit with you while we find some of yours. ❤️

Friday night… finally. 😂

So, it’s Friday.

You’ve made it through the week. You’re tired, your brain is still doing its usual thing, and you’re supposed to be relaxing now.

Except your brain has other ideas.

“Right, now that we’ve got a minute… remember that embarrassing thing you said three years ago?”

Oh, thanks. Exactly what I needed. 😂

I think we sometimes put far too much pressure on ourselves to enjoy the weekend properly.

We should relax.
We should see people.
We should get out.
We should do something productive.
We should make the most of it.

Blimey. I’m exhausted just writing that.

Sometimes Friday night is simply about getting into your comfy clothes, eating something you fancy, watching something completely mindless and letting yourself come down from the week.

And if you don’t feel particularly relaxed yet, that’s okay too.

Your mind and body don’t necessarily know it’s Friday just because the clock says so.

Give yourself a bit of time.

You don’t need to sort your life out tonight.

You don’t need to answer every question your brain throws at you.

And you definitely don’t need to be a better version of yourself by Monday morning.

Tonight, you can just… be.

Even if “being” involves pyjamas at 6.30pm and eating something directly from the packet.

No judgement here. 😂❤️

Have a lovely Friday evening, whatever yours looks like. 🌿

Yes, therapy is hard but:

• Looking in the mirror & hating what you see is harder.
• Having lingering anxiety is harder.
• Feeling resentment towards people who've hurt you is harder.
• Needing to always have control of everyone & everything in your life is harder.
• Needing to run away from your own thoughts is harder.
• Being in an unhealthy, draining relationship is harder.
• Never feeling good-enough is harder.
• Needing to distract yourself or numb your emotions is harder.

Monday evening.

That slightly odd bit of the week when the weekend feels like it happened ages ago, but Friday is still nowhere in sight. 😂

So, if today has been a bit of a lot, perhaps you don’t need to sort everything out tonight.

Make a cup of tea. Put your feet up. Take a breath. Do something that feels comforting rather than productive.

You’re allowed to ease yourself into the week rather than launch into it at full speed.

Be kind to yourself tonight. You’ve got plenty of week left. ❤️
