Tight jaw. Shoulders up by your ears. Chest that never quite opens.

Most of us are so used to holding tension that we don’t even notice it anymore, until the headache hits, or we finally sit down and realise how wound up we’ve been all day.

The breath is the fastest route into the body. When we work with it intentionally, we can release what’s been stored not just in the moment, but over time.

Breathflow integrated breathwork isn’t just about relaxation. It’s about changing the pattern.

Costa Rica has had a lasting effect on me.

We travelled there at a strange moment for me personally. Events following the earthquakes in Venezuela had unfolded just before we left, and with so much of my family history, identity and sense of home tied to that part of the world, I was conscious of the privilege of being away with my family while people elsewhere in the region were living through something very different.

Perhaps that made me more attentive while I was there.

One of the things I noticed again and again was the relationship people seemed to have with the natural world.

Costa Rica is astonishingly beautiful, of course. Forest, ocean, wildlife, volcanoes, extraordinary biodiversity everywhere you look.

What interested me just as much was the sense of care around it.

There seemed to be a pride in protecting what belongs to everyone. In understanding the ecosystems around them. In treating nature as something you are part of and have a responsibility towards.

I learned that this relationship is cultivated from childhood. Environmental education and sustainable development are embedded through Costa Rica’s education system, with children learning about biodiversity, conservation, sustainability and their relationship with the natural world from an early age.

And it made me think about something much bigger.

We tend to care for what we have learned to notice.

If children grow up learning the names of things, understanding how ecosystems depend on one another and recognising that their own choices have consequences, perhaps stewardship becomes less of an initiative and more of a way of seeing.

Most of the time, we breathe without thinking about it.

But the breath is unusual.

Unlike many of the processes our nervous system manages automatically, breathing happens without conscious effort, and yet we can also choose to change it.

And when we do, we can influence far more than simply how much air we take in.

Changing the pace, depth and rhythm of your breathing can affect:

Your nervous system
Slower, more deliberate breathing — particularly with a longer exhale — can help shift the body away from a high-alert state and towards greater regulation.

Your heart rate
Your heart naturally speeds up slightly as you inhale and slows as you exhale. The rhythm of your breathing can therefore influence heart rate and heart-rate variability.

Your carbon dioxide balance
Breathwork isn’t simply about “getting more oxygen”. Breathing faster or more deeply than your body needs can lower CO₂ levels, affecting blood flow and sometimes creating sensations such as tingling, light-headedness or anxiety.

Your muscular tension
Under pressure, our breathing often becomes shallower while the jaw, shoulders, chest and abdomen begin to brace. Changing the breath can influence that pattern of holding.

Your mental and emotional state
Breathing influences arousal, attention and emotional regulation. Sometimes changing the physiology creates just enough space to pause, think and choose our response rather than simply react.

This is one of the reasons I’m so interested in bringing the body more explicitly into leadership and coaching.

The breath gives us a direct way of influencing the state from which we meet pressure.

Your breath may not change what is happening around you.
But it can change how you are able to meet it.
