💙💛 ONE YEAR OF DYSLEXIA CAFÉS! 🎉☕🍪

Today was a little bit special for us!

Firstly, a huge THANK YOU to the 7 lovely families who joined us at Beulah Baptist Church in Bexhill for today’s Dyslexia Café. As always, it was a privilege to listen, share experiences, offer advice and hopefully make a few things feel a little less daunting.

But today also marked a rather special milestone…

🎂 ONE YEAR AGO, we held our very first Dyslexia Café and officially launched Dyslexia South East CIC!

What started as a simple idea, bringing people together for a friendly chat, a cuppa and some free, specialist advice, has grown into something we’re incredibly proud of.

And because we do love a few statistics, here’s what that first year has looked like…

💙 90+ local families welcomed and supported

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 250+ people through our doors

🎂 Ages 5 to 82 supported! Because dyslexia doesn’t have an age limit, and neither does our support!

☕ 300+ cups of tea, coffee and squash

🍪 400 custard creams and 250 digestives (clearly, we have our priorities right!)

📖 40+ community-subsidised dyslexia and dyscalculia screenings

✉️ 60+ letters written to schools, helping families advocate for the support their children need

📱 180+ WhatsApp conversations, offering advice, reassurance and a listening ear long after the Café doors have closed.

And perhaps one of our favourite little milestones? We’re still in regular contact with someone who came to our very first Café a year ago, sharing updates, celebrating progress and working through challenges together.

Because that’s really what this is all about. ❤️

Our Dyslexia Cafés aren’t just two hours on a Saturday morning.

They’re about building relationships, sharing knowledge, helping people find their voice and making sure nobody feels they have to navigate dyslexia, dyscalculia or the wider SEND landscape alone.

Whether you’re a parent worried about your child’s progress, a young person navigating education, or an adult who’s spent decades wondering why certain things have always felt harder than they should, there’s a place for you at our table.

To every family who has joined us, every person who has shared their experiences, every volunteer who has given their time, and everyone who has recommended us to a friend, colleague or family member…

THANK YOU. Truly. 💙

You’ve helped turn a little idea into a growing community.

🚀 AND WE’RE ONLY JUST GETTING STARTED!

We’ve got some really exciting announcements coming over the next few weeks, including a much broader programme of Dyslexia Cafés!

Our plans will see us reaching communities across East Sussex, West Sussex and Kent, and we’re also in discussions about bringing our Cafés into Surrey!

More venues. More communities. More conversations. More families supported.

And through it all, our promise remains exactly the same:

💙 Our advice is always FREE.

💛 No memberships. No subscriptions. No charge for a friendly chat.

Just real people, genuine expertise and a shared belief that everyone deserves to be heard, understood and supported.

Here’s to year two! 🥳☕🍪

💙 Kent Test Results: Whatever the outcome, your child’s potential hasn’t changed. 💙

For many families across Kent, the arrival of Kent Test results brings excitement, relief, uncertainty or disappointment.

If your child’s results weren’t quite what you hoped for, we want to offer a little reassurance.

One test, on one day, does not define your child’s intelligence, abilities or future. 💙

For some children, particularly those with unidentified dyslexia or other specific learning difficulties, timed tests can present challenges that don’t necessarily reflect their true potential.

Perhaps you’ve noticed your child:
📚 Struggles with reading fluency or spelling despite being bright and articulate.
✏️ Finds it difficult to get their thoughts onto paper.
⏰ Needs longer to process questions or complete written tasks.
🧠 Has difficulties with working memory, sequencing or following multiple instructions.
💬 Can explain something brilliantly aloud but struggles to demonstrate the same understanding in writing.

These can sometimes be indicators of dyslexia, although there are many possible explanations.

What if the results weren’t what you expected?

There may still be options available through the secondary school admissions process, including school appeals.

Where there are concerns about an unidentified learning difficulty, a full diagnostic assessment may help families better understand their child’s learning profile, identify strengths and challenges, and provide evidence of their individual needs.

An assessment doesn’t guarantee a successful appeal or a particular school place, but it can provide valuable insight and supporting information where relevant.

💙 At Dyslexia South East, we’re here to listen.

Whether you’re considering an appeal, wondering whether dyslexia might have affected your child’s performance, or simply trying to work out what happens next, we’re always happy to have a conversation.

There’s no obligation to book an assessment, and we’ll always be open about whether we think one would be helpful.

Our advice is always free. We don’t charge for memberships, subscriptions or friendly chats.

Because whatever school your child eventually attends, understanding how they learn and helping them thrive matters far more than a single test result.

💙 Supporting adults too…

Dyslexia, dyscalculia and SEND don’t disappear when school ends. For many adults, understanding their neurodivergence can help clarify and validate a lifetime of experiences that may never quite have made sense before.

At our Dyslexia Café, there’s space to talk about your journey too.

We can help you recognise the strategies you’ve already developed, explore new ways to make everyday life easier and look at how assistive technology can spread or lighten the cognitive load.

We can also offer friendly advice and guidance around Access to Work, Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA), PIP applications and supporting greater independence.

And we understand that adult life rarely comes neatly packaged as “just dyslexia”. Co-occurring differences and conditions can interact in complicated ways with work, study, family life, organisation, wellbeing and simply getting through the day.

No judgement. No assumptions. A safe space, understanding and acceptance.
