The long hot days have gone. This habit hasn’t. ☀️
No lounger. No sunhat. Just me, a book, and twenty minutes at the end of the day where my brain is allowed to stop performing.
Here’s what’s actually happening while I sit there looking like I’m doing nothing.
My body is switching out of fight or flight mode and into rest and digest mode. Two settings, a bit like a dimmer switch rather than an on-off button. All day the “go” setting is running the show. Reading (properly reading, not scrolling) is one of the quickest ways I know to flick that dimmer down.
And once it’s down, good things start happening quietly in the background.
Digestion works better when your body isn’t braced for action. Sleep comes easier too, because you’re not asking your nervous system to go from a hundred miles an hour to zero in the time it takes to turn off a lamp.
Think of it like a mixtape. You wouldn’t skip straight to the slow song. You need the warm-up. This is mine. 📖
Small steps, big impacts. You don’t need a retreat or a bath full of candles. You need ten quiet minutes and something to read.
What’s your version of this? Bath, book, walk with the dog, staring at a wall? Tell me below, genuinely curious 👇🏼
