Notice that I have a life jacket on - I'm the one on the left!

I knew that white water rafting was going to be challenging although I had no idea just HOW challenging!

I was happy to put on the lifejacket.

However, from time to time, we find ourselves in rough waters and we do not see it coming, we are not prepared for it.

Are you parenting a young teen, who is sitting exams right now, or who has their eyes firmly set on university and leaving home in a few months?

Please consider expanding the excited preparations and online shopping to include a conversation about what to do if university life gets a bit too much.

A simple shorthand for checking-in (on a scale of 1-10; how are you doing?)
A reminder of who to call.
A conversation about the reality of leaving home and the balance between embracing the new and losing the familiar. It is normal to find some parts of it easier than others

You have time to do that now. Here's my mantra for those moments:

DON'T MAKE A REEL - MAKE A CALL

Context today - the gap between need and permission.

Whether that permission comes from within (for your own needs) or from the teen or young adult that you want to help - it is essential that permission is given.

As parents, our instinct is to step in and fix the pattern. But here is the tough contextual reality: we generally only accept help when we actively want it, or when we feel we have absolutely no choice left. Forced support rarely sticks.

Your version of 'reality' and theirs may be completely different right now. What looks like an obvious solution to you might feel like pressure or criticism to them.

Here is the kaleidoscope moment: Stepping back so someone else can step-in isn’t a parenting failure. It is a way of offering your support without judgement or fear.
A space where they don't have to worry about disappointing a parent, and can instead focus on untangling their own reflection.

You don't have to carry the weight of fixing it all on your own. Sometimes, giving our older children permission to seek outside support is how the picture finally changes.

If you are a parent trying to navigate this delicate gap with a young adult, coaching provides an unbiased, pressure-free space tailored entirely to their reality, not anyone else's. Let’s talk about how we can turn the lens together

Continuing with Monday's theme of 'context' ... sometimes, we cannot see the solutions that are staring us in the face.
We take a long time to reach the same conclusion that other people have been suggesting for ages!
We have no idea why or how it has taken us so long.
Maybe the context here is TIMING.
Coaching works when you WANT to help your self. With the best will in the world, until you are ready ... nothing will stick.
The good news is that once you ARE ready, changes can be made quickly and effectively. The picture can change with just the smallest of actions.
If you have been wondering when things will finally change - maybe today is the day?
When you are ready to turn the lens, let me know. Confidential and professional coaching is here to help you map out that next move.

Stop beating yourself up over past actions. Context changes everything.

Have you ever looked back at a past decision and thought, "What on earth was I thinking?"

It’s incredibly easy to judge our past selves using the knowledge, maturity, and clarity we have today. But that’s not a fair fight.

Before you start beating yourself up about where you "tripped up" or made a less-than-ideal choice, inject some context into the memory:

What was your energy level like then?

What pressures were you facing?

What information did you actually have access to at that exact moment?

Your choices looked different then because your reality was different then. Give yourself the grace of context.
You were doing the best you could with the tools you had.

Coaching steps away from unfair self-criticism and invites you to replace it with clearer understanding, so you can move forward without the heavy baggage of regret. Context is important; coaching is about looking forwards, not backwards.

Coaching sessions are confidential and each one is unique to the needs of the individual and their goals.

But there are common threads that run through them all - here are a few:

They are a time to put down a worry or a burden, and to think.

They can be times of real insight.
They can be times of quiet realisation and adjustment.

They look to the future that you want to work towards - where you've come from is less important than where you want to be.

They are a friendly and safe place to clear your mind.

They can be effective over a short space of time - even one session can help to clear the view for you.

If you were wondering about some coaching, for yourself or someone else, let me know. This could be the best thing you do all weekend πŸ₯°
