OCD can make someone look demanding or controlling, but underneath it is often fear, doubt, guilt, disgust or responsibility. Compassion matters - but OCD still doesn’t get the remote control.

I think OCD is hard on the whole family - Family burnout in OCD is so real.

When everyone is checking, reassuring, adjusting and walking on eggshells, the whole system needs support - not just the person with OCD.

Ever feel like your mental health is a bowl of spaghetti? One strand is anxiety, another is low mood, another is “why do I keep getting stuck in these loops?” - and you’re not even sure where to start.

That’s called comorbidity (more than one difficulty at once) and it’s far more common than people realise. In my latest GetCBT blog, I explain:
- why problems often “travel together” (e.g., long-term social anxiety tipping into depression, or worry blending into OCD-style doubt loops)
- how evidence-based therapy can still be clear and structured when symptoms overlap
- what a good treatment plan looks like when we’re using CBT, ACT, CFT and (where appropriate) EMDR, in a NICE-aligned way

You don’t need to fit neatly into one box to get help. We’ll help you unpick it, name the strands, and build a plan that targets what’s keeping it going.

How to talk to the person without talking to OCD

One of the hardest family skills is responding to the person’s distress without answering OCD’s demand for certainty. “I’m with you, but I’m not joining OCD.”

Gentle parenting is beautiful until someone refuses to wear socks.
If August has left you overstimulated, touched out, snappy, guilty, and one snack request away from leaving the country — you are not alone.
Children don’t need a perfect parent.
They need a parent who comes back.
Repair beats perfection.

A new planner will not heal your nervous system.
But it might trick you for 36 hours.

September can bring that “new term, new me” pressure — but dramatic resets rarely last when your actual life still exists.
Instead of asking, “How do I become a completely different person?”
Try asking, “What would make life 5% easier?”

There is no nervous system collapse quite like school shoe shopping.

Money pressure, sensory overload, decision fatigue, public parenting, and a child saying “they feel weird” with absolutely no further detail.
Sometimes you’re not overreacting.
Sometimes your brain has simply reached capacity.

For many families, August is loud, unstructured, and emotionally full.

One thing children do learn brilliantly during this time?
How adults respond to stress.

Altruism isn’t about grand gestures - it’s about modelling:
âś” kindness under pressure
âś” repair after snapping
✔ compassion when things don’t go to plan

That matters for adult mental health too.
In CBT, we learn how this builds flexible coping.
In CFT, we learn that it strengthens compassionate responding.
In ACT, we learn that it’s living your values in context, not waiting for calm.

This is why Altruistic August fits GetCBT so well - skills for life, not just therapy rooms.

This week’s invitation:
Let kindness be visible, imperfect, and human - especially on holiday days that feel anything but relaxing.
