Blood biomarkers

Optimal vs. Normal Reference Ranges

The suggested optimal for women under NHS is currently 11–310 µg/L yet optimal suggested ranges are 70–100 µg/L (for hair/energy) 45–80 µg/L (for general health).

A lot of symptoms are ignore based on guidelines which are not evaluating our optimal health but rather looking for underlying health concerns or diseases. It’s duty upon us individually to ensure that we can increase our bookmakers to prevent illness and other concerns such as hair fall and skin health by ensuring we supplement correctly.

Why the “Normal” Range is Broad

Clinical Focus:
NHS and standard medical labs use ranges that represent 95% of the population to identify disease (anemia) rather than peak performance.

Inflammation Risk:
Ferritin is an “acute-phase reactant,” meaning it can rise during illness or inflammation. A high ferritin score (e.g., >150 µg/L) might not mean “good iron” but could indicate underlying inflammation.

Sensitivity:
Standard cut-offs (like 15 µg/L) have low sensitivity, meaning they miss many people who are symptomatic but not yet anaemic.
