17% of fatal allergic reactions in school-aged children happen at school.

That is not a small number. And behind it are families who trusted that the people caring for their child were prepared.

Benedict's Law, which passed earlier this year, will require schools in England to have written allergy policies, trained staff, spare adrenaline auto-injectors, and individual care plans for every child with an allergy, from September 2026.

This is a step in the right direction. But the law sets the minimum. What we really want for our children is a school community where every adult knows, understands, and feels confident about what to do.

Something a little different this week.

We are exploring a question that does not get talked about enough in allergy circles: the role that culture, family expectations, and food traditions play in how we manage our children's allergies.

For some families, it is the grandparent who "does not believe" in allergies. For others, it is navigating celebrations where the food is central to belonging. For others still, it is trying to explain a care plan in a language that is not your first.

We want to hear from you.

Saying “No” isn’t rude, it’s protective. Give your child clear words for tricky moments with friends, clubs and class treats.

Teach them clear and confident communication from a young age, so that they can advocate for themselves when you are not there.
