A new chapter for the BACDP.

After ten years of dedicated leadership, Jane Reynolds is stepping down as President of the British Association of Cosmetic Dental Professionals and will continue to support the Association in her new role as BACDP Honorary Advisor.

We’re delighted to welcome Dr Rachel McCartney, BDS and Pat Popat, DHT, as Co-Presidents, with Suzannah Sinclair, DHT, continuing as Vice President.

Together, they will lead the BACDP into its next chapter, building on strong foundations and continuing our commitment to education, professional development, patient safety and high standards within non-surgical facial aesthetics.

A huge thank you to Jane for everything she has given to the BACDP over the past decade, and a very warm welcome to Rachel and Pat in their new roles.

Have your say if you have had issues with the GDC log in this year

We know many of you are experiencing difficulties with the new MyGDC system, and we’ve been following the discussions and concerns shared across the profession.

The British Association of Dental Therapists (BADT) has already contacted the GDC to raise these issues and we are now collating further information from dental care professionals to help demonstrate the scale and impact of the problems being encountered.

An email will be sent to BADT members shortly with further information and a request to share their experiences. However, we feel this issue is too important to limit to our membership alone, so we are opening this survey to the wider dental profession to ensure as many voices as possible are heard.

We appreciate that, with the annual retention fee and renewal deadline approaching, these issues are causing unnecessary stress and uncertainty for many colleagues. We are committed to continuing our dialogue with the GDC and advocating for a resolution on behalf of the profession.

Significant changes over the last decade

As the BACDP marks 10 years, we are reflecting on some of the significant changes and clarifications affecting dental professionals working within non-surgical aesthetics.

The JCCP recently released a statement addressing enquiries and concerns regarding the General Dental Council-regulated “scope of practice” when dental professionals perform non-dental cosmetic procedures.

The JCCP, working alongside the GDC, understands that cosmetic procedures including botulinum toxins and dermal fillers are not the practice of dentistry.

However, dental professionals may continue to decide whether to provide non-surgical cosmetic injectable procedures through direct access by applying their professional judgement within the GDC’s existing regulatory framework and evidencing their continuing competence to do so.

Dental professionals must be able to evidence that they are trained, competent and indemnified/insured to undertake such activities.

They must also continue to act within the wider framework of professional practice set by the GDC.

As we celebrate 10 years of the BACDP, it feels only right to start with the person whose vision, advocacy and determination helped bring the association into being.

President Jane Reynolds founded the BACDP to create a unified voice for dental professionals working within non-surgical aesthetics, at a time when dentists, dental hygienists and therapists were not always fully recognised within the wider industry.

Jane’s commitment to professional representation, safe practice and patient-centred care has shaped the BACDP from the very beginning.

Her work has helped ensure dental professionals are part of important conversations around the scope of practice, regulation, competence and the future of aesthetics.

10 years on, the BACDP continues to build on that founding vision: advocating for dental professionals, supporting safe practice and keeping patient safety at the heart of everything we do.

The JCCP has released an important statement clarifying the scope of practice for dental professionals performing non-surgical cosmetic procedures.

Developed alongside the General Dental Council, the statement confirms that procedures such as botulinum toxins and dermal fillers are not considered the practice of dentistry. However, dental professionals may continue to provide these treatments where they can demonstrate appropriate training, competence and indemnity, and remain accountable to the GDC for their practice.

The statement also outlines the role of the JCCP register, professional accountability and the standards expected of practitioners working in aesthetics.
