Cerebral Palsy Midlands

Cerebral Palsy Midlands Cerebral Palsy Midlands is a Birmingham based charity that empowers people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities from across the West Midlands.

Cerebral Palsy Midlands is a Registered Charity and adult day service provider that uplifts the lives of people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities from across the West Midlands region. We were the first charity in England and Wales setup specifically for people with cerebral palsy, i 1947. Cerebral Palsy is an umbrella term for various different physical and learning disabilities, which is

primarily caused by oxygen deprivation to the brain before, during or after birth, leading to different degrees of damage to parts of the brain that control the body's muscles. This can lead to numerous physical disabilities, such as impaired movement of limbs, stiffness of muscles, impaired reflexes and exact movement. Because of the complexity of the brain, other disabilities and impairments can occur, such as learning, speech, vision and hearing difficulties. It is widely assumed throughout society that a person with cerebral palsy must have a learning disability. This is not always the case. According to NHS figures, around 1 in 400 people in the UK today have some form of the condition. Some people's cerebral palsy does not necessarily affect them in their everyday lives, while other people may need a high level of care and support. Our charity aims to empower people in every aspect of their life, to support individuals in attaining greater everyday skills, and to help develop their unique talents. Cerebral Palsy Midlands achieves this by following a person centred approach throughout its work, projects and services. It is human nature for individuals to strive to achieve success in their chosen field, as well as having recognition of this achievement. We fully believe that everyone has the right to be an active citizen, regardless of any disability they may have. We run a community centre in Harborne, Birmingham, which provides much needed daycare, activities, training and educational courses for people over the age of 19, who are classed as having substantial and critical needs. We also support people in accessing the local community; combating social isolation, as well as organising short break holidays throughout the year.

🌟 It's Volunteer Week! 🌟

We caught up with our amazing volunteer, Amanda, who shared her inspiring journey with us. After taking a course at Bournville College focused on community engagement, Amanda found her passion for support and care work here at Cerebral Palsy Midlands.

Her favourite part? Helping others and witnessing their happiness! Whether it's taking folks out for meals or bingo, or lending a hand at events like the 'Weoley Big Night Out' and the 'Summer Sizzler Community Fete', Amanda truly makes a difference.

When we asked her to sum up her volunteering experience in three words, she said: "Fantastic, Amazing, and Helpful!" πŸ’–

🌟 Volunteer Week Spotlight 🌟

Meet Emma, one of our dedicated staff members who supports the Thursday afternoon horse riding sessions at Seecham with the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA). Emma shares that the RDA volunteers have been making a difference in our community for over 50 years, driven by their love for horse riding and their commitment to giving back. 🐴❀️

Thanks to these incredible volunteers, our citizens have access to unique opportunities that enhance their physical and mental well-being. It takes dedication, time, and compassion to support individuals as they learn to ride and enjoy the experience of being on horseback.

Emma says it best: "They come every week, come rain or shine; they are good people." πŸ™Œ

We're so grateful for our RDA volunteers! Let's celebrate their hard work and passion this Volunteer Week!

🌟 It's Volunteer Week, and we want to shine a spotlight on an incredible volunteer who has been with us since 2009.....Vic! 🌟

Vic first joined us during his work placement at Bournville College and quickly became an integral part of our team. Despite taking a few breaks, he always finds his way back, driven by his passion for helping others.

After caring for his dad, Vic was inspired to give back to the community and support those in need. He loves the variety that volunteering brings; no two days are the same! Each experience, whether it's a holiday to Blackpool or day trips to Valencia, has enriched his life and the lives of those he helps.

Thank you, Vic, for your dedication and the joy you bring to our community! ❀️

🌟 Meet Honey Stewart, one of our amazing volunteers at Cerebral Palsy Midlands! 🌟

"I'm Honey Stewart, and I usually support the service users by sitting with them to chat, helping pick them up, and assisting with cutting food. I heard that Cerebral Palsy Midlands was a great place to volunteer from my Placement Manager at Halesowen College, and I wanted to make the service users happy. All the days are my favourite because I just love making everyone smile!

I strive to make everyone feel welcome and seen for how excellent they are. It's important that we as staff and volunteers, can be here for our service users, supporting them physically, emotionally, and sociallyβ€”and most importantly, being a friend. I think that everyone here is my friend, and I will always appreciate them!

My three words to describe volunteering are "Absolutely bloody fabulous!" πŸ’–βœ¨

This week, CPM would like to acknowledge the volunteers who help support our service and charity. Meet Kat. Kat is pictured on the right of the photograph (here she was supporting citizens on a weekend getaway to 'The Big Tin Barn'). Kat is pictured with a blue Birmingham City Football Top.

"My name is Katrina, but I like to be called Kat. I have been volunteering at Cerebral Palsy Midlands for three years. I have assisted in movement in water sessions, which allow citizens to experience being in a swimming pool. I support with lots of tasks in the centre and with care, including helping citizens with lunch, helping citizens access the community on day trips, transport and other activities. I enjoy volunteering at CPM. I like spending time with the citizens. I have been on weekends away, as some citizens do not have the opportunity to go away. Sometimes that can be challenging, but it's worth seeing the citizens happy, and that's why I do it."

Meet Ian West, one of our dedicated volunteers at CPM! πŸŽ‰
Ian loves DJ-ing and driving our citizens on holiday adventures. His favourite moment? Abseiling with Nick, who showed incredible determination despite a little setback. πŸ’ͺ🏼 Ian believes volunteering opens up opportunities for our citizens to experience things they might not otherwise be able to do.

Describing his experience in three words: Rewarding, Amazing, and Fulfilling. Recently, Ian just returned from a fantastic getaway to the Big Tin Barn in Somerset! πŸ•οΈ We couldn't do all these wonderful activities without the support of our amazing volunteers.

Join us in celebrating Volunteer Week and the incredible impact our volunteers make! πŸ™Œβ€οΈ

Making music, making memories, making connections. 🎹🎸πŸ₯

Every Tuesday afternoon, our CPM Connection Rock Band turns up the volume and gets creative together here at Cerebral Palsy Midlands.

From drums to guitar to keys, our musicians have been hard at work rehearsing material for their new album, building confidence, expressing themselves and having plenty of fun along the way. Music gives people a voice, creates friendships and opens opportunities to shine in ways words sometimes can’t.

Today, we were also delighted to welcome photographer Jas Sansi, who spent time capturing everyday life at CPM. Those real moments of personality, creativity and connection that make our service so special.

A huge thank you to Irwin Mitchell for generously sponsoring these photography sessions, helping us create a bank of beautiful images we can use across our publicity, promotion and communications to share the impact of what happens here every day.

We can’t wait to share more of the band’s journey with you 🎢
