LOCATION, LOCATION...

Once again my lovely clients have alerted me to another one of those admin gremlins.
Apparently the Access Dermatology pin for the Melrose clinic on google maps has moved about half a mile up Dingleton road! As a result, some people struggled to find me on Saturday 😞

I have no idea how this happened, it was in the right place to start with. However I think I have corrected it now. I will also get a nice pavement sign so it's easier to find, and I have edited the appointment confirmation email to reaffirm that the clinic is held on the premises of Melrose Foot Care - Melrose Clinic , at the lower end of Dingleton Road.

Thanks again to my absolutely wonderful clients, for trusting me with their skin, but also for helping me to improve my service every day!

EXCITING UPDATE! Availability in MELROSE greatly increasing from OCTOBER!

I started Access Dermatology because I knew that too many people struggled to get skin concerns assessed quickly enough.

What I didn't immediately anticipate was just how many people were actively looking for professional skin assessment, mole checks and lesion removal.

Because enquiries and bookings have increased so quickly, I am extremely happy to announce that from October onwards I am able to offer clinics EVERY SATURDAY instead of fortnightly. I will also be able to make clinic days longer, therefore from October onwards I can see at least THREE TIMES as many clients as currently.

This means I can help more people, without compromising on what I know my clients expect - quick access to unhurried, thorough consultations with a qualified professional.

I am very grateful to Melrose Foot Care for making this possible. Although our services are separate, we share the same ethos and commitment to do the absolute best for our respective patients. And my clients LOVE the beautiful clinic room!

"WHY DO I NEED AN INITIAL APPOINTMENT?"

I have been asked a few times why clients cannot just book a short appointment to quickly freeze a lesion they would like gone.

That's a fair question, so I shall answer it.

The answer is, like with most things I do, Safety.

CryoPen is a very effective and safe way to deliver Cryosurgery - so safe in fact, that even areas as delicate as eyelids can be treated with it. Complications are extremely rare, and even if they do happen, they are of a minor nature.

But that doesn't mean it can be used indiscriminately. There are things I need to check to make sure freezing is the right thing to do.

>THE LESION NEEDS TO BE BENIGN. Only in very clearly defined exceptional circumstances would it be appropriate to consider treating a pre-cancerous lesion (such as actinic keratosis for example) with this method. Accidentally freezing an aggressive skin cancer must be avoided at all cost.

>SIZE AND SITE OF THE LESION are important. Very large or thick lesions will likely require multiple treatments and repeat visits. I believe it is important to discuss this at the outset so my client can make an informed choice on whether or not to go ahead.

>SOME MEDICAL CONDITIONS AND MEDICINES make Cryosurgery inadvisable, whilst others may result in delayed healing.

>SOMETIMES OTHER TREATMENT OPTIONS CAN BE PREFERRALBE - whilst Cryosurgery is the safest and most economical option for a very large number of lesions, occasionally I see something that makes me think "yes I could do this, but another method would be more effective or cheaper". I will ALWAYS advise the treatment option that best serves my patient's needs, no matter if I lose business as a result. My Patient's needs come first!

Destroying a skin lesion is a significant responsibility, and one I take extremely seriously. Once treated, there is usually no further chance to diagnose - this is why I insist on seeing all lesions myself, in person, as well as take a medical history.

The initial consultation is only needed once, for new patients. It is not a sales tactic or optional extra - it is a vital part of keeping my clients safe.

It can't be said often enough - protect your skin from sun damage, no matter what your skin type 🙏

This summer has seen record-breaking temperatures and high UV levels - but according to data, more than 6 in 10 adults* in Great Britain haven't bought sunscreen this year.

In fact, just over half (56%) have bought sunscreen in the last two years.

Sunscreen expires. Its effectiveness can diminish once it passes its shelf-life – so sunscreen from previous years might offer less protection than its label says.

To know how long your sunscreen will stay at full effectiveness, look for the open-lid symbol featuring the letter M and a number, which shows how many months the sunscreen will last once open.

We've partnered with NIVEA SUN for the last 14 years to help people enjoy the sun safely, which goes beyond just using sunscreen:

1. Seek shade – especially between 11am and 3pm in the UK.

2. Cover up – with clothes, a wide-brimmed hat and UV protection sunglasses. The more skin that’s covered by your clothing, the better the protection.

3. Apply sunscreen – with at least SPF 30 and four or five stars. Make sure to reapply it regularly and generously.

WHO SHOULD CHECK YOUR MOLES?

Artificial intelligence is everywhere.

AI is a great tool and can really help with clinical decisions. It is cheap, and available to everyone. But like any widely accessible tool, it is not always used wisely.

Search for "mole checks near me" and you see a bewildering range of results.

You may ask yourself how Pharmacy staff, beauticians, or aesthetics practitioners can recognise or exclude skin cancer?

The answer is that they can't.

Instead, images are taken and sent away. What happens next varies - images may end up being assessed remotely by a clinician (who never met you), or they may be fed through an AI algorithm.

I use remote services too, especially when there's uncertainty and a second opinion is needed. But for second opinions to be helpful you should have a qualified opinion yourself in the first place!

Wherever you decide to have your skin lesions assessed, make sure you see someone with actual experience in detecting skin cancer.

Your skin deserves more than a camera and an Internet connection.
