A LITTLE EXTRA SUPPORT ❤️
Hello September, and back to school and soon university too. 🎒🎓
I've talked about children's nutrition recently and what happens as they become more independent and start making their own food choices. But there is one person we haven't talked about enough, YOU. ❤️

As parents, grandparents and carers, we can be very good at putting everyone else's needs before our own.
We make sure they have breakfast, fill the water bottles, think about the packed lunches and encourage them to eat well, sleep well and stay active. But somewhere along the way, we can forget to take care of ourselves too.
And the truth is Children don't just listen to what we say. They watch what we do. ❤️

They see whether we eat well, drink water, enjoy fruit and vegetables, move our bodies and make our own wellbeing a priority. We don't have to be perfect. In fact, that's an important lesson too. Healthy habits are simply the small choices we make, most of the time. So perhaps, as September brings new routines, it's worth asking:

“What about me too?”

Filling your own cup isn't selfish. It's part of setting the example. Sometimes, despite our best intentions, busy life means our nutrition isn't quite where we'd like it to be. For me, this is where whole food capsules can help to bridge the gap between what we know we should eat and what we actually eat in real life, alongside a healthy, varied diet, never instead of one.

With the Healthy Starts initiative, young people aged 4–21 can receive Fruit and Vegetable Blend capsules or chewables FREE, what an absolute gift. ❤️ So perhaps this September isn't just about getting the children back on track. Perhaps it's about the whole family taking a few small steps forward together. ❤️

Who is the young person in your life you'd love to give a Healthy Start to?
Your child, grandchild, niece, nephew, or a friend's child?
If you'd like to know more about how Healthy Starts works, I'd love to hear from you. I'm always happy to share the information. ❤️

WHEN THEY BECOME MORE INDEPENDENT: STUDENT NUTRITION 🎓🥦

For many parents, September brings a big milestone: a child heading off to university.
It's an exciting time, and often an emotional one too. But independence around food doesn't suddenly begin at university.
It starts much earlier.

As children grow into teenagers, they begin making more of their own choices, what they eat, when they eat, how much water they drink and whether they choose to stay active. Then, for some, comes university, college or their first job away from home, when those choices become almost entirely their own.
That's why the habits built earlier in life can matter so much, not as a guarantee of perfect eating, but as a foundation to fall back on.
There will likely be pizza nights, takeaways and the odd questionable meal made late at night, and that's a normal part of student life, not something to worry about!

What tends to help is having a few simple, flexible habits:
🥦 Fruit or vegetables with at least two meals a day
💧 Keeping a water bottle nearby
🍳 A source of protein with meals
🌾 Wholegrains and fibre-rich foods where possible
😴 Not underestimating the value of sleep
🏃‍♂️ Staying active — even walking to lectures counts
And sometimes parents simply want a little extra peace of mind while their child's diet finds its own balance.
That's where nutritional support can sometimes have a place, alongside, rather than instead of, a healthy and varied diet.

In my next post, I'll share a little more about an option some parents and grandparents may find useful for young people from childhood through to their early twenties. ❤️

BACK TO SCHOOL… AND A GENTLE THOUGHT ON NUTRITION 🍎🎒

September is just around the corner and always seems to arrive quickly, doesn’t it?

New routines, earlier mornings, packed lunches, after-school activities and family life picks up pace again.

We all know children benefit from a varied, nutritious diet, but real life doesn’t always make that simple, does it?

Some children are naturally adventurous eaters. Others are happy to eat the same few meals on repeat. Then there are the rushed breakfasts, forgotten water bottles and carefully prepared vegetables 🥕🥒 that somehow come home untouched! 🙃

And then there’s the other thing that comes with going back to school, GERMS! 🦠

With children mixing closely together again, the inevitable coughs, colds and bugs can quickly make their way around the classroom and home.

Good nutrition can’t stop children picking up every bug going around, but a varied, nutrient-rich diet provides the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients their bodies need to support a healthy immune system and keep them well-nourished as they grow.

A few gentle foundations can help:

🥦 A variety of fruits and vegetables
🍳 Good sources of protein
💧 Plenty of water
🌾 Fibre-rich whole foods
😴 Good quality sleep
🏃‍♀️ Regular movement
📱 Healthy boundaries around screens

Perhaps most importantly, healthy choices are something we practise daily, not something we need to get perfect.

Nutrition in childhood isn’t only about what’s on the plate today. It’s also about the habits young people carry forward as they grow.

September can be a lovely, low-pressure moment to gently reset the family routine.

Small changes tend to add up over time. ❤️

And remember, this isn’t about creating the “perfect” diet. It’s about giving growing bodies a good nutritional foundation, most of the time 👍

Next in this mini series, I’ll share some thoughts on what happens when children become more independent and start making more of their own food choices.

Blackberry season always brings back special memories for me. 🫐🐾

I came across this video of my beloved Freddie helping me pick blackberries from the hedgerows. He’s no longer with us 💔but moments like these remind me how much joy can be found in the simple things in life 🐾

As well as being delicious, blackberries are one of nature's nutritional powerhouses.

Just one cup provides around 8g of fibre nearly 30% of your daily requirement. Fibre helps feed our beneficial gut bacteria, supports healthy digestion, promotes blood sugar balance, and can help keep us feeling satisfied between meals.

Blackberries are also packed with polyphenols 💜💜 plant compounds that act as powerful antioxidants 💪. These compounds help protect our cells from oxidative stress, support a healthy inflammatory response, and contribute to overall health and wellbeing.

So if you're out walking the dog, enjoying the countryside, or simply passing a hedgerow, now is the perfect time to make the most of these seasonal treasures.

I'd love to know—have you been blackberry picking this year? 🫐🌿

☀️💧 HOT WEATHER = HYDRATION TIME 💧☀️

When the sun comes out, many of us remember the sunscreen but forget the WATER! 💦 😅

Even mild dehydration can leave you feeling:
🥱 Tired
😵 Headachy
🧠 Foggy-headed
🍪 Craving sugary snacks
💪 Low in energy

And as we get older, our thirst signals aren’t always as strong so it’s even more important to sip regularly throughout the day💦

A few easy hydration tips:
💧 Start the day with a big glass of water💦
🍓 Add lemon 🍋, cucumber 🥒 mint or berries for flavour
🥗 Eat water-rich foods like 🥒, melon 🍈 lettuce 🥬, strawberries 🍓
☕ Balance tea/coffee ☕️ with extra water💦💦💦💦
🧴 Keep a water bottle nearby as a reminder

A simple guide:
✔️ Pale straw-coloured urine = usually well hydrated💦
⚠️ Dark yellow urine = time to drink more fluids💦💦

Hydration helps support:
❤️ Energy
🧠 Concentration
🌿 Digestion
💪 Muscles & joints
😊 Healthy skin

So today’s challenge:
How many glasses of water have you had so far today? 👇💦

We talk a lot about protein, carbs, and fats but what about fibre?

Fibre is one of the most underrated nutrients when it comes to overall health, yet it plays a crucial role in how our bodies function day to day.

Why fibre matters:
• Supports healthy digestion and regular bowel movements 💩💩
• Helps the body eliminate waste and toxins effectively, including hormones and excess cholesterol👍
• Slows down sugar absorption so better blood sugar balance ⚖️
• Keeps you fuller for longer (hello, fewer cravings)🙌
• Feeds your good gut bacteria for better overall health ✅

🥦 Where to get it?
Vegetables 🫛🥑🥒🥕🥦🥬 are one of the best and most reliable sources of fibre, especially when you include a variety:
• Leafy greens (like kale, 🥬 lettuce)
• Cruciferous veg (broccoli 🥦cauliflower)
• Root veg (carrots🥕beetroot)
• Courgette 🥒 peppers 🫑 , green beans 🫛

The key is variety and consistency, aim to fill at least half your plate with vegetables at most meals.

Simple. Powerful. Often overlooked.

If you’re focusing on protein but skipping the veg 🥦🥬🥒🫑 you’re missing a big piece of the puzzle 🧩

Sleep is one of the most underrated foundations of good health, yet it influences so much more than just how tired 😴 we feel.

When sleep is poor, it can disrupt hunger hormones, increase cravings (especially for quick carbs 🥐🥖🥪) and lead to higher blood sugar levels the following day. Over time, this makes it harder to stay on track with healthy choices, even when your intentions are good.

That’s why a consistent approach matters. Prioritising quality sleep, nourishing your body with whole foods, and building simple, sustainable daily habits creates a ripple effect in supporting your energy, your mood, and your overall wellbeing 🙌

Our programmes are designed to help you do exactly that, stay consistent, feel supported, and make those healthy choices feel easier and more natural every day 💚

Happy Easter.

How about enjoying chocolate without the guilt? Ever tried pairing 85% dark chocolate with blueberries? 🍫🫐

This is such a delicious combo and it’s also a powerful nutritional synergy at work.

Both are rich in polyphenols, those amazing plant compounds that help reduce inflammation and support heart health. But when you eat them together 🍫 🫐something even better happens 🙌

The flavonoids in dark chocolate 🍫 and the anthocyanins in blueberries 🫐 work together to enhance antioxidant activity in the body. Think better protection for your cells, improved blood flow, and even support for brain function.

This hack can also help stabilise blood sugar when enjoyed in the right portion, making it a smart treat rather than a guilty one.

Enjoy this:
A small square of 85% dark chocolate with a handful of fresh blueberries after a meal. Simple, satisfying, and doing your body good 🎉

Sometimes the most powerful health habits are also the most enjoyable 🍫🫐

Happy Easter ❤️
