Pain at the base of your thumb? It's easy to assume the worst — but it's often not arthritis.

One of the most common causes is de Quervain's tenosynovitis: inflammation of the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist. It makes everyday actions like lifting a kettle, opening a jar or picking up a child surprisingly painful.

It is common in anyone doing repetitive gripping or thumb movements.

Here's the reassuring part: unlike arthritis, de Quervain's usually recovers fully. Most cases settle with rest, a supportive splint or a simple injection. The earlier it is treated, the faster the recovery.

Try the self-check in our carousel 👆 and if it sounds familiar, it's worth getting assessed.

In our latest article, Mr Wee Sim Khor explains what de Quervain's is, how to tell it apart from arthritis, and the treatment options available.

Would you know if you'd damaged a nerve in your hand?

Nerve injuries are easily missed. Your fingers can still move normally even when a nerve has been completely cut — which is why people often delay getting help after what looks like a minor wound.

The warning signs to look out for: numbness or tingling that does not improve, a "dead" patch of skin along one side of a finger, burning pain, or unusual sensitivity to touch or cold.

A completely cut nerve will not repair itself. Early surgical repair improves outcomes. Nerves regrow on average 1mm per day. Any delay in treatment delays nerve recovery.

In our latest article, Mr Wee Sim Khor explains how to recognise a nerve injury, how nerve damage is repaired, and what recovery really looks like.

After a tendon repair in the hand, recovery follows a careful, staged process. You'll wear a protective splint, start guided movement within the first few days, and work closely with a hand therapist over the following weeks and months.

Most patients can return to daily activities around 12 weeks after surgery, but full grip strength and fine motor control can take six months or more. The biggest factor in a good outcome? Sticking with your rehabilitation programme.

In our latest article, Mr Wee Sim Khor explains what to expect at every stage of recovery — from surgery through to getting back to normal.

As we spend more time outdoors this spring and summer, it's a good time to check in with your skin.

Most moles and skin lesions are completely harmless, but changes in size, shape, colour, or texture should always be assessed by a specialist.

Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK, and when caught early, outcomes are significantly better.

If you have noticed a new or changing lesion, do not wait. Early assessment can provide peace of mind or, if needed, ensure prompt treatment.

Mr Wee Sim Khor offers specialist assessment and treatment for skin lesions and skin cancer, including mole removal and excision, at Lancashire Plastic Surgery.

❕Noticed a lump near your wrist, hand, or finger?

Ganglion cysts are among the most common benign lumps affecting the hand and wrist. They form when fluid leaks from a joint or tendon sheath, creating a visible swelling beneath the skin. While they are not cancerous, they can cause discomfort or restrict movement depending on their size and position.

Some ganglion cysts resolve on their own, but others may benefit from treatment – including aspiration or surgical removal.

If you have a lump you are unsure about, a specialist assessment can provide reassurance and guide the most appropriate next step.

Noticed a mole, lump, or skin change?

Many people develop skin lesions such as moles, cysts, or lipomas over time. While most are harmless, it’s important to have any new or changing lesion properly assessed.

At Lancashire Plastic Surgery, Mr Wee Sim Khor offers specialist assessment and treatment for a range of skin conditions, including mole removal, cyst removal, skin lesion excision and skin cancer surgery. Most procedures are performed under local anaesthetic, allowing patients to return home the same day.

If you notice a mole or skin lesion that is changing in size, shape, colour, or causing discomfort, it’s best to have it checked by a specialist.

Early assessment can provide reassurance and ensure appropriate treatment if needed.

Do you experience tingling, numbness, or weakness in your hand or wrist? These could be early signs of carpal tunnel syndrome, a common condition caused by pressure on the median nerve in the wrist. Recognising symptoms early can help prevent the condition from worsening and allow for effective treatment.

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it may be worth seeking advice from a specialist.

Early assessment can help determine the best treatment options and prevent long-term nerve damage.
