Today marks 20 years of me ‘officially’ teaching and - roughly - 32 years of practising Yoga.
I say ‘officially’ because, like many at the time, I started by sharing what I had learned with family, friends, and colleagues - and even once with folk who wandered over and joined my morning practice at an early - long before I ever considered gaining a teaching qualification.
Of course, we now live in very different times!
Back then, Yoga in the UK wasn’t polished or packaged - and honestly, as far as my offerings go, I doubt it ever will be.
Over the years, I’ve watched the landscape shift from a relatively unconventional practice - often publicly funded through adult education or studied in dedicated spiritual centres - into the commercialised industry it is today.
While that shift has undoubtedly fuelled the wider ‘wellness’ industry, it has also led many - often those who believe themselves untouched by commercialism - to confuse ancient wisdom with spiritual bypassing or fast-tracked self-realisation.
At its essence, Yoga is about union with our True Selves and that never-ending journey is messy & raw, as much as it is gentle & beautiful.
It asks us to be both radical & loud, whilst moderate & silent.
What Yoga offers is abundant yet rare, simple yet profound.
So, 32 years on… I’m still learning, still unlearning and above all, deeply grateful for every being who has shared even the smallest - yet infinite - moment with me along the way.
Here’s to a practice that’s real, inclusive, and rooted in Unity 🙏

Today is International Women’s Day and the theme is ‘give to gain’ and whilst I understand the intention, something about the phrasing made me pause. It sounded a little transactional - as if giving is something we measure in terms of return - and also, let’s be honest…women have been giving for a very long time!!!
In a previous IWD post, I shared some reflections on patriarchy in modern Yoga and how modern systems have reshaped the way the practice is taught and experienced. Since that time I’ve become increasingly passionate about funded community Yoga as a quiet counterpoint to that, which is - in part - how came to be.
When Yoga happens in this context something shifts and what emerges is something gentler and quietly radical.
Spaces where our shared practice is less affected by patriarchy & capitalism echo a more traditional way of teaching Yoga, one that pre-exists a time when a holistic & spiritual practice became commodified, exclusionary and individualistic.
To me, that feels like a deeply feminist response - not feminine in terms of gender but in values: collective wellbeing, inclusivity and Oneness.

Funded Community Yoga doesn’t dilute the practice. It restores it.

When we come together - to quietly challenge patriarchy & capitalism - we all benefit 🧡

Yesterday I delivered my very first 15-minute Chair Yoga session as part of the Wellbeing offer for the amazing Volunteer Cornwall staff 💚
I was late…
Well, technically I was 10 minutes early but I’d clicked the wrong link 🙈
Scroll through and you’ll see my face move from “I’ve got this” to “what’s happening?” to absolute delight when I finally landed in the right place and everyone magically appeared ✨
We took a little time to arrive - I definitely had to take my own advice and let go of the day so far. We checked in with our breath, explored some gentle spinal movements, shared a short listening meditation, finished with a big stretch… and I closed with a heartfelt thank you for being there.
What a joy to be part of such a forward-thinking wellbeing offer. Staff wellbeing has always been deeply important to me throughout my working life, so it feels especially meaningful to support those who dedicate themselves to the wellbeing of individuals and communities across Cornwall 💛
And, I promise that I won’t be late next time 😉

We’re just over halfway through our Sunday Morning Yoga offer, funded by through the Live Longer Better Fund, and it’s been such a joy witnessing this community grow 🧡 We’re also loving our new home
Over the weeks we’ve been exploring joint mobility, making Sun Salutations accessible, alternate nostril breathing and meditation and for one have been having a wonder-filled time!
I love these photos - thank you, Mickey - because they capture what we’ve been exploring together: how safe alignment looks different in every body, how inviting the back muscles to work can support spinal extension and how simple, no-hands realignment cues can make a big difference! We’ve explored different ways of transitioning in and out of poses so movement works for our bodies, noticed how following our own natural rhythm of breath helps us fully arrive in poses and how shared stillness at the end of asana practice allows our energy to settle before our very personal (and definitely not photographed!) alternate nostril breathing and meditation practice.
Like all Live Longer Better offers, this project recognises that wellbeing is much more than the absence of dis-ease and brings people from all walks of life together in a shared, welcoming space - one where a sense of belonging and connection grow naturally. And of course in Yoga, that sense of Oneness is central to our practice and to deepening our connection with our true Self 💚
If you have been thinking about joining us but haven’t as yet, know that you would be SO welcome.
Do reach out if you have any questions 🙏
