Today marks 20 years of me ‘officially’ teaching and - roughly - 32 years of practising Yoga.
I say ‘officially’ because, like many at the time, I started by sharing what I had learned with family, friends, and colleagues - and even once with folk who wandered over and joined my morning practice at an early - long before I ever considered gaining a teaching qualification.
Of course, we now live in very different times!
Back then, Yoga in the UK wasn’t polished or packaged - and honestly, as far as my offerings go, I doubt it ever will be.
Over the years, I’ve watched the landscape shift from a relatively unconventional practice - often publicly funded through adult education or studied in dedicated spiritual centres - into the commercialised industry it is today.
While that shift has undoubtedly fuelled the wider ‘wellness’ industry, it has also led many - often those who believe themselves untouched by commercialism - to confuse ancient wisdom with spiritual bypassing or fast-tracked self-realisation.
At its essence, Yoga is about union with our True Selves and that never-ending journey is messy & raw, as much as it is gentle & beautiful.
It asks us to be both radical & loud, whilst moderate & silent.
What Yoga offers is abundant yet rare, simple yet profound.
So, 32 years on… I’m still learning, still unlearning and above all, deeply grateful for every being who has shared even the smallest - yet infinite - moment with me along the way.
Here’s to a practice that’s real, inclusive, and rooted in Unity 🙏
