What if you could FEEL the music, rather than hear it?
Something I’d really love to explore is bringing gong and soundscape relaxation sessions to Deaf communities and Deaf societies.
Because sound isn’t simply something we hear - Sound is vibration & vibration can be felt through the body.
With a large enough space, I can work with gongs and bowls to gradually build the sound and vibration into a crescendo - creating a powerful physical resonance that can be experienced through the body and surrounding space.
For someone who is Deaf or profoundly hard of hearing, the experience isn’t necessarily about hearing the individual notes.
It can be about feeling the music.
Feeling the deep vibration of a gong through the floor.
Feeling the resonance in the body.
Feeling the movement of sound through the space.
Feeling the music build, swell and change.
We already know that vibration can be used as an alternative sensory pathway for people with hearing loss - for example, bone-anchored hearing devices transmit sound through vibration of the skull, while tactile devices use vibration to communicate information to people who cannot rely on hearing. (RNID)
So we don’t want Deaf people to simply be offered a quieter version of something designed for hearing people.
I want to explore creating a genuinely tactile sound experience, where the vibration itself becomes part of the music.
🎶 Not just hearing the sound.
🤲 Feeling the sound.
🌊 Experiencing the resonance.
Karmic would love to work with Deaf societies, Deaf organisations and sensory support services to explore what this could look like in practice.
Because music shouldn’t have to be heard to be experienced. 💛
Our free soundscape relaxation sessions are still available to charities, non-profits etc. tag your charity on this post for them to experience a free gong bath for clients, staff, service users and volunteers.
