On World Nutrition Day, we're reflecting on something we're incredibly proud of - the inaugural Ramsay/Elysium Chef of the Year Competition 2026.

This competition was inspired by far more than great cooking. Every chef was challenged to create dishes that were nutritious, affordable, sustainable, and suitable for the people in our care. Taste and presentation mattered but more so did understanding the real impact that food has on health, wellbeing, and recovery.

Last Thursday, we were proud to exhibit at the Northampton ABI Forum held at The Mercure Hotel.

It was an inspiring and insightful event, with powerful contributions from individuals with lived experience of acquired brain injury (ABI), alongside highly informative sessions from professional speakers.

Hearing first-hand how multidisciplinary support has enabled people to progress in their recovery was particularly impactful and reinforces the importance of the work we do.

The forum was also a great opportunity to connect with commissioners, families, potential service users, and colleagues from across the neuro field.

Thank you to the organisers and everyone who contributed to making it such a worthwhile day.

A Little Bit of Magic at Bradfield House

Spending time with animals can do wonders for our wellbeing - helping us feel calmer, happier and more connected. Animals reduce stress, lift our mood and can even help ease feelings of loneliness. Caring for them also brings a sense of purpose and routine, which can be incredibly rewarding.

At Bradfield House, they love creating experiences like this for the people they support. For the past few years, they’ve been working with the team at Incredible Eggs, who provide eggs and hatching kits for them to look after on site.

This year, seven chick eggs were carefully cared for and successfully hatched. Once hatched, the chicks stay with the site for 10 days before returning to the Incredible Eggs farm to be re-homed.

When hatching time arrives, the excitement really builds - someone shouts “It’s time!” and everyone gathers around to watch the chicks make their way into the world. Service users, staff and visitors pull up chairs, watch closely, and enjoy gentle cuddles with the new arrivals once they’re hatched.

Last year, we cared for duck eggs — and watching the ducklings splash around in water for the first time brought so much laughter and happiness! Experiences like these create wonderful memories and brighten everyday life for everyone at Bradfield House.

Last week was National Day of Staff Networks and we wanted to take a moment to celebrate ours.

Elysium Healthcare has six Employee Resource Groups, made up of over 150 colleagues from right across the organisation:

• Race and Ethnicity
• Neurodiversity
• LGBTQ+
• Disability
• Women
• Working Families and Caregivers

These groups exist to make sure every member of our team feels like they belong, that their voice is heard, their experience matters, and that there's a community here for them.

Since they were established, our ERGs have helped shape 8 new policies, set up 4 support groups, and created over 40 resources for staff. That's a real and lasting impact on how we work.

Elysium’s Head of DE&I, Nicky Lintott says: “Our ERGs have played an important role as partners for leadership, providing valuable insights into employee needs and concerns, helping shape policies and practices that support inclusivity.”

Access to democracy is more than just a right - it’s about feeling heard, valued and connected.

At Gateway Recovery Centre, John Dyas, Councillor and Therapy Coordinator, and the team are helping service users rediscover their voice through voting. By creating safe, inclusive spaces and breaking down barriers, they’re turning something that can feel complex into something empowering.

From mock polling stations to open conversations, people are building confidence, understanding their rights, and seeing the difference their voice can make.

This work goes far beyond voting - it’s about confidence, independence and feeling part of something bigger!

We are pleased to share a new guide that supports fair NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) assessments for Huntington’s disease (HD).

Susan Field, Care Centre Director, The Dean Neurological Centre, Gloucester said:
"We are delighted that this guidance has been published to support us and others when working with people living with HD, which in many respects still remains widely misunderstood."

Developed with specialists experienced in both HD and CHC, the guide aims to ensure people receive the care and support they need, when they need it.

Heidi McCarthy, Care Centre Director, Stanley House and Bowley Court Neurological Centre, Hereford said:
"How wonderful we now have some guidance on the complex care and needs of people living with HD. After many years of supporting people with this complex neurological condition, to finally have something to support professionals in their understanding of the complexity of people living with the condition is so beneficial."

It’s International Nurses Day, and today we’re celebrating one of the amazing nurses within Elysium, Annie Hassim, a Registered Mental Healthcare Nurse at Reene House, Newport, Wales.

Annie reflects on her nursing journey, from early work in palliative care and community volunteering, to decades in mental health nursing, Annie’s story is one of compassion, honesty, resilience and purpose.

“There is nothing quite like seeing progress in the individuals you support, knowing that your care, patience, and dedication have helped someone move forward.“

Mental Health Awareness Week takes place every May and is a chance to focus on the importance of good mental health, challenge stigma and encourage positive action to support wellbeing.

Around one in five UK adults experience a common mental health condition such as anxiety or depression. Rates are higher among young people aged 16-24. Poor mental health is one of the biggest causes of workplace absence, with millions of workdays lost each year.

This year’s theme is Action – for yourself, for someone else, for all of us!

Raising awareness is important, but real change happens when we take action. At Elysium we have trained staff members to be Mental Health First Aiders, providing them with knowledge and skills to spot signs of staff experiencing poor mental health and refer them to the correct person. One of our Mental Health First Aiders, Hana Aubad, shared what this week means to her:

“Mental Health Awareness Week creates space for open and honest conversations. As a Mental Health First Aider, people know they can come to me without fear of judgement. It’s so important that everyone has someone they can talk to — at home or at work — when they’re struggling.

Creating environments where people feel safe to talk about mental health helps breakdown stigma and makes those conversations feel normal. Openness can lead to real, positive change and helps make the world feel a little less lonely.”

This week, let’s take action. Do one small thing to support your own mental health or take a step that could make a positive difference to someone else.

Deaf Awareness Week highlights Deaf culture and the experiences of Deaf and hard of hearing people in the UK, while shining a light on the barriers they still face in education, employment and everyday life.

The 2026 theme, “Right to understand – Together, we break barriers,” focuses on removing communication barriers and creating inclusive spaces where Deaf people can fully participate and thrive.

With over 12 million people in the UK experiencing hearing loss, Deaf Awareness Week is a reminder that accessibility matters — from British Sign Language (BSL) and captioning to inclusive attitudes and environments.

At Elysium, All Saints Hospital provides culturally sensitive care for Deaf men with additional communication needs. Our Deaf and hearing colleagues work side by side, combining professional expertise with lived experience to ensure communication, understanding and patient care are at the heart of everything we do.

Hospital Director Daniel Bremner feels awareness weeks like this are important in breaking down communication barriers for Deaf people, and especially service users. This week, All Saints Hospital will be marking Deaf Awareness Week with staff training, BSL social hubs, a silent (and earplug) hour, daily Deaf awareness facts, quizzes, a visual access audit with patients, and celebrating progress through a Most Improved Signer award.

Together, by raising awareness and breaking down barriers, we can help build a more inclusive society.
