Why am I so delighted with the Expert Bits comfy barrel hanging cheek???

More to follow but… enough to say I just witnessed the biggest change I have ever seen with this bit! πŸ™Œ 😍

This bit stood out during my training with Horse Bit Advice but it’s not one that I have the pleasure of οΏΌfitting that often. However, today’s transformation was next level!

I wish Bob would like this bit πŸ˜‚ οΏΌ

There are still many misconceptions surrounding musculoskeletal therapy within animal care, and these misunderstandings can sometimes prevent owners from accessing appropriate support for their animals.

❌ Musculoskeletal therapy is only needed when an animal is already injured.

βœ… In reality, musculoskeletal practitioners can support comfort, movement quality, mobility, conditioning, rehabilitation, and overall wellbeing long before problems become more significant.

❌ Mobility support is only important for older animals.

βœ… Animals of all ages and activity levels can experience muscular tension, movement restrictions, compensation patterns or physical challenges that may benefit from professional assessment and support.

❌ Owners are β€œjust paying for an hour session”.

βœ… What often goes unseen is the huge amount of professional responsibility that exists behind the scenes.

Practitioners spend countless hours attending continuing professional development courses, reading research, writing reports, collaborating with veterinary professionals, maintaining insurance and registration requirements, and continually developing their knowledge to help ensure safe, evidence-informed care.

❌ All practitioners have the same qualifications and standards.

βœ… Training, professional accountability and scope of practice can vary significantly, which is why understanding registration and professional standards is so important for owners.

❌ Some people assume musculoskeletal therapy works in isolation.

βœ… In reality, qualified practitioners often work collaboratively alongside vets and multidisciplinary teams to help support the animal as part of a wider healthcare approach.

Education and awareness matter because informed owners are better equipped to make confident, safe decisions for their animals’ wellbeing.

I posted this to my Tips Group but I also thought it would be helpful on this page πŸ“‘ I use this daily!

Building on Small Circles Around You

Once your horse understands how to walk small circles around you, crossing the inside hind leg underneath their body, you can gradually progress the exercise by asking the hindquarters to step further away whilst keeping the shoulders relatively still.

Think of it as moving from a small circle into a gentle hindquarter yield. As the hindquarters step around, the inside hind leg must continue to cross underneath and across the body. This encourages greater engagement of the hindquarters, increased activation of the core muscles, and improved mobility through the pelvis and lower back.

The key is not speed. Ask for a few calm, deliberate steps, rewarding any attempt to move the hindquarters away while maintaining balance and relaxation. The shoulders should stay as quiet as possible, with the movement coming primarily from the hind end.

Benefits of progressing to a hindquarter yield include:

βœ… Greater hind limb engagement and strength

βœ… Improved pelvic and lumbar mobility

βœ… Increased body awareness and coordination

βœ… Better control of individual body parts

βœ… Enhanced balance and postural stability

βœ… Encourages the horse to lift through the back and work more correctly from behind.

Remember, quality is always more important than quantity. Just a few correct steps can be far more beneficial than many rushed or unbalanced ones. Enjoy ☺️
