We know that having a diverse array of gut microbes is beneficial for our health but had you heard about Bacterial membrane vesicles (BMVs)? They are tiny bubbles released by bacteria. Think of them as microscopic “packages” that bacteria send out containing substances such as proteins, fats, DNA, RNA, enzymes, and signalling molecules.
💚
In the gut, many bacteria continuously release BMVs. These vesicles are much smaller than whole bacteria, which means they can travel more easily through mucus and interact directly with human cells. But it is becoming clear that not all BMVs are helpful, in fact current evidence suggests that both the composition of the microbiome and the integrity of the gut barrier determine whether BMVs are mostly beneficial messengers or contributors to systemic inflammation and disease.
💚
Therefore gut barrier is extremely important
Your gut lining normally acts as a selective filter.
A healthy barrier:
* Allows nutrients through
* Keeps most bacteria and bacterial products inside the gut
💚
When gut barrier function is impaired (“leaky gut”), permeability increases. ‼️ This is your alert to not ignore gut symptoms like reflux, bloating, gas, diarrhoea.
