At first glance, you think the woman merely wounded.

Then her face begins to open.

Not torn. Not cut.

Opened.

Her skin has split along impossible seams, peeling back in thick, fleshy plates like the petals of some carnivorous forest bloom. Where her cheeks should be, there are now yawning jaws. Where her brow once furrowed in fear, another ridge has lifted, revealing a crown of interlocking teeth beneath. Even her chin has parted, hinging downward to expose yet another serrated maw.

Rows upon rows of curved fangs glisten in the half-light — not set in a single mouth, but in many. Each section of her face has become its own hungry thing. The flesh is dark, ridged, and swollen, as though something abhorrent has taken root beneath her skin and forced her features to blossom into horror.

And yet…

One eye remains unchanged.

Wide. Wet. Human.

It rolls toward you in silent pleading while the rest of her face flexes and twitches, the teeth clicking together in restless anticipation. The infection — or possession — has not replaced her.

It has repurposed her.

Cracks spider down her neck as the splitting continues, the sound faint but unmistakable — the slow tearing of living bark. A wet, rasping breath escapes from somewhere within the layered jaws. It does not sound like pain.

It sounds like hunger.

You take one step down the wrong passage—and the air changes.

The light dies behind you as something drops from above, weightless and silent. There’s no time to scream. A sharp pressure blooms at your temple, cold and intimate, and your thoughts scatter like startled birds. The creature’s many legs tighten, anchoring it in place, and the tunnel seems very far away now.

Your sword slips from numb fingers. The world narrows to a single, fading point as the spider settles, patient and inevitable, claiming the warmth behind your eyes as its new home.

Moments later, the passage is still once more. Another adventurer gone. Another warning unheeded.

Your journey ends here.
You are dead. ☠️
