4th February 2026 is World Cancer Day 🎗

Cancer is a long-term condition, affecting not just physical health but also mental, social, and economic well-being. Its impact affects individuals, families and communities. Yet traditional cancer care often focuses only on biology and symptoms, overlooking key social and environmental factors — like income, support systems, and living conditions — which play a crucial role in how people experience and recover from cancer. There’s a growing need for more holistic, compassionate care.

The World Cancer Day Campaign focuses on four main principles:

PRINCIPLE 1: ENGAGE PEOPLE AND COMMUNITIES 🫂

PRINCIPLE 2: REORIENTING THE MODEL OF CARE 💼

Today is Rare Disease Day! 🖐

A disease is considered rare when it affects fewer than 1 in 2000 people.

Rare diseases – by the numbers:
🦠 300 million people with rare diseases
🦠 3.5 – 5.9% of the population
🦠 72% are genetic diseases

Characteristics of rare diseases:
🧬 70% of rare diseases start in childhood
🧬 All paediatric cancers are rare cancers

Over 6000 rare diseases are characterised by a broad diversity of disorders and symptoms that vary not only from disease to disease but also from patient to patient suffering from the same disease.

72% of the diseases are genetic and almost 1 out of 5 cancers is rare.

Relatively common symptoms can hide underlying rare diseases leading to misdiagnosis and delaying treatment. Quintessentially disabling, the patients quality of life is affected by the lack or loss of autonomy due to the chronic, progressive, degenerative, and frequently life-threatening aspects of the disease.

The fact that there are often no existing effective cures adds to the high level of pain and suffering endured by patients and their families.

Rare Disease Day is about raising awareness and encouraging fundraising to help further research into these conditions for better diagnosis, treatment and quality of life for those suffering. 🧪

This week is Eating Disorder Awareness Week! 🫂

The charity Beat hosts various eating disorder awareness campaigns throughout the year and 24th February - 2nd March marks this year's Eating Disorder Awareness Week with the Twogether Campaign! 🤝

In the UK, at least 1.25 million people are living with an eating disorder. That’s at least 1 in 50 people. And yet many people wouldn’t know how to spot the signs that someone has an eating disorder. This is important because the sooner someone is treated for an eating disorder the better their chance of making a full recovery. ❤️‍🩹

It's National Apprenticeship Week! 🎉

At Poole Bay Pharmacy we have recently been able to employ two apprentice pharmacy technicians! They are working with us while training to become registered pharmacy technicians through a two year course! 👨‍⚕️

We have also been lucky enough to have been able to host pharmacy technician apprenticeship placements from other healthcare sectors including Dorset Healthcare and University Hospitals Dorset. 👩‍⚕️

Pharmacy technicians are very valuable team members within a community pharmacy. Their skills are not limited to community pharmacy roles as you may find them working in hospital wards, GP surgeries, care homes and various other places. Pharmacy technicians not only help patients make the most of their medicines but they also help to support our pharmacists through providing services such as blood pressure checks, vaccinations and accuracy checking of prescriptions. They help pharmacies manage the dispensing workload and we are very grateful for all of their help! 🙏

Dry January Challenge Starts Now!

Alcohol Change UK is a charity that aims to raise awareness of alcohol consumption, its health impacts and misuse. Every day 20 people in the UK die as a result of alcohol. Alcohol Change UK help to support those affected by alcohol, whether you are struggling as an individual or a friend or relative of someone struggling with alcohol consumption.
