Water Safety

Take care and follow local safety advice if you are going into the water to cool down.

The Royal Life Saving Society’s website has information about summer water safety::

47% of UK accidental drownings occur between May and August.* We also see a heightened risk of drowning when air temperatures are higher.  When UK average maximum air temperatures reach or exceed 25°C... There is a fivefold increase in accidental drowning risk, when compared to days with an...

It's Learning Disability Week!

Learning Disability Week takes place this week from Monday 15th to Sunday 21st June 2026.

Learning Disability Week is an annual UK awareness week led by Mencap, the country’s largest charity for people with a learning disability.

The week brings together individuals, families, supporters, schools, employers, and policymakers to challenge stereotypes and push for greater inclusion.

It also celebrates the talent and contribution of people with a learning disability across art, sport, work, and community life.

The week shines a light on the lives, achievements, and experiences of the 1.5 million people in the UK with a learning disability.

The 2026 theme is “Do you see me?”, asking the public to recognise, value, and listen to people with a learning disability.

We'd like to share this water safety information from the Royal Life Saving Society UK - RLSS UK following the tragic news stories of several child deaths last month from water-related incidents.

Air temp isn’t water temp. Stay safe.
Entering cold water makes you GASP.
Cold water increases your breathing and heart rate, causing PANIC.
Your muscles will get too cold, making you uncoordinated and WEAK.
RLSS UK’s advice is:
• Choose lifeguarded spots
• Never swim alone
• Wear bright colours
• Enter the water slowly
• Get out before you get cold
If you get into trouble, Find Your Float.
It may feel warm outside, but the water isn’t.
Share this vital water safety advice to help keep others safe.

For information to share with your young person about how to keep safe in and around water follow these guidelines from the Child Accident Prevention Trust :

💧 Even on a very warm day, open water can still be cold enough to cause cold water shock. This physical reaction makes it hard to control breathing or to swim, causing swimmers to panic.
💧 There are hidden dangers of swimming in open water like rivers, lakes and reservoirs - including strong currents, deep, cold water and things under the surface you can’t see.
💧Follow the RNLI's FLOAT TO LIVE guidance - which could save lives!
The best way to float is to tilt your head back with your ears submerged.
Try to relax and breathe normally.
Gently move your hands and legs to help you stay afloat.
Spread your arms and legs out to improve stability – and it's OK if your legs sink, we all float differently.
Once your breathing is under control, call for help or swim to safety.
Practise floating in a supervised location like a swimming pool.

A drowning child can’t speak or control their arms. They slip quietly under the water. It’s only in the movies they splash about and cry for help. It’s a scary thought. Drowning happens silently. But once you understand how and where drowning happens, there are things you can do to prevent it....
