Smells and scents can feel overwhelming for many neurodivergent individuals.
Strong perfumes, cleaning products, food smells, smoke, air fresheners or unexpected scents can sometimes feel intense, distracting or distressing. For some neurodiverse people, certain smells may affect comfort, concentration and daily life.
This is not being “dramatic”. It relates to sensory sensitivity, which is common in neurodiverse individuals and should be understood, respected and supported.

WHY CAN hot weather feel harder for autistic people?

The weather has been very hot recently. We know this can cause distress and confusion for many neurodiverse individuals.

It is important that this distress is not minimised or ignored by others.

Sensory dentistry is common in neurodiversity and in distress caused by change; it may explain some of this distress, especially with autism. Sensory overwhelm can occur when the weather changes, such as higher heat, bright light from the sun, suncream discomfort, and busy and noisier outdoor environments.

Overwhelm from change can occur as well, when the weather changes. For example, different clothing, plans suddenly changing to more outdoor activities, hours of sleep feeling different due to light and heat changes, or the expectation of food changes.

At NurtureNeuro, we encourage the distress to be recognised and small adjustments made where possible. For example, finding cool spaces, regular drinks, breaks away from noise, outdoor areas, using sunglasses and eye masks, cold baths, using tools such as quiet fans, comfortable clothing and extra downtime to recover.

Sensory Sensitivities Series: Sight Sensitivity

Visual input can feel intense for many neurodivergent individuals.

Bright lighting, flashing screens, crowded rooms, busy displays, clutter, or lots of movement can sometimes make everyday environments feel harder to manage. What may seem minor to someone else can feel distracting, uncomfortable or overwhelming.

This is not overreacting. It can be linked to sensory processing differences and the way visual information is experienced.

For many neurodiverse individuals, calmer spaces, softer lighting and reduced visual demands can make a meaningful difference.

SNAP Charity does incredible work in Brentwood, offering guidance, activities, support groups, a specialist library and a listening ear for families of children and young people with additional needs.

At NurtureNeuro, we’re so pleased to help raise awareness of the wonderful support they provide to our neurodiverse community.

We often reccomend families to SNAp after a diagnosis with us at NurtureNeuro. We gain wonderful feedback from our families of how much they found SNAP Charity helpful.

We are grateful for the feedback our clients share with us.

Our child autism assessments include a speech and language assessment, helping us better understand each child’s communication and support needs.

A parent recently shared that our guidance had been invaluable, with the school now starting the EHCP process and SALT support due to begin soon.
