Plans for a mortuary with capacity for up to 700 deceased people at a York business park were reported on 19 August 2026. Whatever the practical reasons given for a facility of this size, it is understandable that the thought of so many people being cared for in one industrial setting has caused such deep concern.

Someone who has died does not stop being precious simply because their life has ended. They are not a number, a space to be filled or part of a process. They remain loved, and the way they are cared for still matters enormously.

Today, the world says goodbye to a true icon.

Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80.

Following the Legacy case, the Government has announced urgent work to develop detailed proposals to strengthen standards across the funeral sector, including formal regulation, led by the Department of Health and Social Care.

We welcome that.

But for families, confidence also comes from something much more immediate: being able to ask questions and get clear, honest answers.

👉Where will my person be cared for?
👉 Can I see where they will stay?
👉 Who will be looking after them?
👉 What checks and processes are in place?

These should never feel like awkward questions.

If your person is in our care, you should feel completely comfortable asking them. You are trusting us with someone you love, and you deserve to understand what happens behind the scenes.

We are members of the National Association of Funeral Directors and are inspected as part of that membership, giving families added reassurance that the standards behind our care are being checked.

More than anything, we want families to know this:

You are allowed to ask. You are entitled to answers. And you should feel confident in the care your person is receiving.

He Isn’t One of Us!
Robert Bush called himself a funeral director.
He owned funeral homes. He arranged funerals. He stood before grieving families and accepted their trust.

But he is not one of us!

A funeral director is trusted with people who can no longer speak, object or protect themselves. We become their final safeguard.

Behind the doors of every mortuary, there is no audience.
Nobody checks whether we wash someone with care.
Nobody sees us cover them with dignity.
Nobody watches as we gently place a wedding ring back on a finger or straighten a lock of hair before a family comes to visit.

We do those things because they matter, not because anyone is watching.

Robert Bush did the opposite.

Families were told cremations had taken place when they had not. Some were given the ashes of strangers. They scattered them. Buried them. Kept them on their mantelpieces. Took comfort from them.
Only to discover that the person they loved had never been there at all.

He didn’t simply steal money.
He stole certainty.

He reached back into families’ grief and destroyed the one thing every funeral is meant to provide: confidence that they had done right by the person they loved.

That is why this case matters far beyond Hull.

It is not the story of a funeral director.

It is the story of a man who used the title of funeral director to gain access to vulnerable people and betray the trust placed in him.

Most of us will never become known outside our own communities. We quietly care for the dead, knowing that almost everything we do happens out of sight.

The public should judge us by that standard.

Not by Robert Bush.

He may have owned funeral homes.
He may have worn the suit.
He may have called himself a ‘funeral director’.

But the title does not make the person.

He isn’t one of us!

Robert Bush, the former owner of Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull, has today been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

For the families affected, this has never just been a court case. This is about loved ones. About trust. About grief being made even more painful by things no family should ever have had to discover.

The statements heard in court have been absolutely heartbreaking. Families have spoken about the shock, the anger and the lasting trauma of finding out that the person they believed had been laid to rest had not been treated with the dignity they deserved.

Some families have had to question ashes they held close, jewellery they treasured and even tattoos made in memory of someone they loved.

It is almost impossible to imagine the pain of having your grief reopened in that way.

Twenty years is a significant sentence, and it reflects the seriousness of what happened. But no sentence can give these families back the peace they were denied.

Today, more than anything, should be about them.

About the people who trusted, who grieved, who were let down in the worst possible way and who have had to find the strength to speak about it.

Our hearts are with every single family affected.
