Sometimes disappointment isn’t just about what someone does; it’s about what we expected them to do.
There’s an important difference between what we deserve from someone and what that particular person is realistically capable of giving us.
When we repeatedly expect someone to behave in ways their past behaviour tells us they probably won’t, we can end up stuck in the same cycle of frustration and disappointment.
Realistic expectations don’t mean lowering your standards. They mean seeing people and situations more clearly; and deciding what you want to do with that information.
