The Pilates method is growing in popularity for many reasons. Not only does it improve core stability, tone, lengthen and strengthen your muscles but it gives you a new sense of awareness about your own body; how it moves, where it holds tension and where your ideal postural alignment should be. It is this awareness that brings about the first step to change. Anyone can benefit from Pilates whether you're young, old, super fit, have suffered a recent injury or consider yourself a couch potato. Pilates can be tailor made to suit you and your particular needs. Why not try it out, contact me to book an enrolment class, 07950 304 071 or email [email protected].

🌳 To grow up, you have to grow down.

One of the beautiful principles we explore in Classical Pilates is opposition.

Just like the roots of a tree grow deep into the earth so the tree can reach higher and higher, our bodies need a sense of grounding and opposition to create length.

As one part of the body reaches in one direction, another creates an opposing connection. Rather than collapsing or simply stretching, we create space, strength and length through resistance and reaching the body in the opposite direction to the spring.

The deeper the roots, the stronger the foundation. And from that foundation, we can grow.

This is something we’re constantly exploring in our Pilates practice , finding the opposition, creating the connections, and allowing the body to lengthen from a place of stability rather than force. That’s why when I heard this audio I had to use it as it’s so perfect to go with ouyr very real Pilates practice.

Root down. Reach up. Find your opposition. Create your length. 🌿

One of the things I love most about this clip from the Zest and Pleasure interview with Tracy Belcher and John Howard Steele is the insight into how Joseph Pilates actually taught.

His goal wasn’t for you to follow his cues perfectly he wanted you to learn to move independently.

There was a specific agenda behind his teaching: to develop enough awareness, understanding and control that you could move yourself into the next exercise without relying on someone else to tell you exactly what to do. In fact he had very little guidance.

Imagine being able to lie down on your mat, step onto the Reformer, or move through your practice with such confidence that you instinctively know how to set yourself up and transition into what comes next. You can then have that with you everywhere you go. This is something we really strive for in our 1:1 sessions and also in our groups by naming the exercise first to see if you can start to move into the exercise yourself without us guiding every piece.

Of course, having a teacher beside you is invaluable. However, once you know your exercises and can move more independently we can be there for the juicy stuff, we can then observe, refine, challenge and help you discover more. But ultimately, the goal is to give you the tools to become more independent in your own movement.

It’s such a fascinating insight into Joseph Pilates’ original method and a beautiful reminder that the teacher isn’t there to create dependence, but to help you develop the knowledge and control to move for yourself. 🤍 Thank you Tracy and John for this wonderful interview I love listening.

I’ve come to really value my own self-practice. Not because everything feels good or looks right all the time. I feel none of it is perfect or particularly Instagram able, but it’s real. It’s where I’m most aware of what I still have to learn.

I’m still very much a student of classical Pilates, and I know I always will be. There’s always another layer to understand, another detail to refine, and something that asks more of me than I expected.

Horseback is one I find particularly hard, as you can see here. It doesn’t always come easily, and I think that’s part of the point. We all have movements that challenge us, things that expose where we’re not quite there yet.

For me, the practice is in staying with it. Working at it, paying attention, and accepting that being a student means there will always be things I’m still figuring out.

Do you take time to self practice or take regular 1:1s to refine and deepen the work?

CLIENT APPRECIATION 🤍

Lauren has been coming to the studio for around 2–3 years now, and I can honestly say she is one of the most consistent and determined people I know.

In all that time, I think she’s missed maybe one or two sessions. She turns up every single week, ready to work, ready to learn and ready to push herself a little further.
And watching her journey has been pretty special.

She started as a complete beginner and has worked her way through the method with so much patience and determination. She now knows her order of the exercises she’s learnt so far, her exercises, her set ups and her transitions. Today she did this back tree!!! With such confidence and trust 🥹. Seeing things that once felt completely unfamiliar become part of her week is such a lovely thing to witness.

But I think what I love most about Lauren’s journey is that it has become about so much more than the exercises.

She has built such a different relationship with her body. A real appreciation for what it can do, how strong it is and how much it is capable of. Alongside her Pilates practice, she’s made changes to her lifestyle, found more flow and balance in her everyday life, and created healthier habits that have genuinely become part of who she is.

And yes, her physical transformation has been incredible but that is just one small part of a much bigger journey.

Lauren is present every week. She listens, she works hard, she asks questions, she keeps going when something is difficult and she never seems to lose her determination to improve.

She is honestly such a pleasure to teach.

And, without even realising it, she’s an inspiration to me too. 🤍

This is exactly why I love teaching Pilates. I gett to witness people discover just how much their bodies are capable of, and being there for all the little milestones along the way.

So proud of you, Lauren. Keep going one day I’d love to work alongside you in a studio. ✨
