The Sussex Cancer Fund was established in 1981 to work with the NHS to create new and improved facilities providing the best possible cancer care for Sussex. Since then, ยฃ3 million has been raised to make the Sussex Cancer Centre more attractive, comfortable and effective. Unlike many charities, costs are exceptionally low with only a very small percentage spent on administration, almost all money donated to us can be spent directly to benefit our patients. Unfortunately one in three of us in Sussex will develop cancer, which means that everyone is ultimately affected by it, and anyone who receives oncology treatment at the RSCH will benefit from something the charity has done or paid for. Our patients come from all over Sussex, from Rye to Chichester and up to Crawley. The Sussex Cancer Fund pays for a range of services and equipment for our patients. These include day-to-day โ€˜extrasโ€™ that make a difficult and stressful experience a little more civilised โ€“ the subsidised car park specifically for cancer patients, complementary therapy, free vending machines providing hot fresh drinks for patients, newspapers, magazines, a DVD library for chemotherapy patients and the like. We also pay for equipment, from specialist gowns for breast cancer patients costing ยฃ10 but which make a big difference to patientsโ€™ experiences, right through to medical equipment costing many thousands. We have also funded the systematic refurbishment of the Sussex Cancer Centre, including building the new chemotherapy suite, and more recently, the patient lounge, reception and garden creating a greatly improved environment for patients. The charityโ€™s most ambitious project is the Macmillan Horizon Centre which we have built in partnership with Macmillan. It is a holistic service away from the clinical environment, providing patients with a range of support and services throughout their cancer treatment. These include financial/benefits advice, counselling, wig services, complementary therapy and the opportunity to meet with support groups.

๐Ÿ’— An amazing ยฃ837.87 raised for Sussex Cancer Fund! ๐Ÿฐ

A huge thank you to the Breast Screening Team for organising this lovely bake sale as part of their Breast Care Roadshow for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We loved being part of it!

To every local business that donated treats, everyone who baked, volunteered, bought a cake or made a donation โ€“ thank you. Itโ€™s wonderful to see so many people coming together to raise awareness and help make a difference for people affected by cancer across Sussex.

Your kindness helps us fund equipment, services and local research, making days like this about much more than cake (although the cake was definitely a bonus! ๐Ÿ˜‰).

๐Ÿ’› Has Sussex Cancer Fund made a difference to you or someone you love?

Perhaps youโ€™re currently having cancer treatment, have received treatment in the past, or have seen a loved one benefit from something weโ€™ve funded. We would love to hear first-hand how our work has made a positive difference to your experience.

Whether it was a service that supported your wellbeing, equipment that helped with your care, or a small comfort that made a difficult day a little easier, your story matters to us.

Weโ€™re looking for people who would be happy for us to share their words through our social media channels and newsletters, with a photo if you feel comfortable sharing one. Just a few words would mean so much, and you only need to share what feels right for you.

Your experiences can help others understand the difference local support makes for people affected by cancer across Sussex.

๐Ÿ“ง If youโ€™d be willing to help, please contact Jo at [email protected].
Thank you for considering sharing your story. We would be very grateful. ๐Ÿ’›

Weโ€™re delighted to have awarded a major grant to support the next stage of this important work at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. ๐Ÿ’™

For many people, breast cancer treatment brings an early or sudden menopause, with symptoms that can have a big impact on everyday life. Having time to talk, feel heard and get advice tailored to your needs can make such a difference.

Led by Dr Renske McFarlane, this research will bring patients and healthcare professionals together to develop and test better menopause support, building on the specialist pilot clinic which has already helped around 100 patients.

People with lived experience will be at the heart of the project, helping shape everything from patient information to how people access specialist care.

A huge thank you to everyone who donates, fundraises and supports Sussex Cancer Fund. You make research like this possible. ๐Ÿ’™

Breast cancer treatment can save lives, but for many people it can also bring an early or sudden menopause. Symptoms such as hot flushes, fatigue, poor sleep, joint pain and changes to mood can have a big impact on everyday life, and finding the right support isn't always easy.

That's why our team at University Hospitals Sussex has developed a specialist menopause clinic for people affected by breast cancer treatment. โค๏ธ

Led by Dr Renske McFarlane, the clinic provides personalised support, giving patients time to talk openly about their symptoms, explore treatment options and get advice tailored to their individual needs.

Around 100 patients have already benefited from the pilot service, helping them manage the long-term effects of treatment and improve their quality of life.

Thanks to a new grant from Sussex Cancer Fund, we're really pleased to begin plans to expand this important work and help even more people. โค๏ธ

A lovely afternoon of conversation, practical advice and support at our Living Well Through Cancer event yesterday ๐Ÿ’œ

Huge thanks to our speakers, Kirsty Clutterbuck, Sue Brown, Kieran Weeks and Steve Burns, for sharing their knowledge on nutrition, life coaching, keeping active and financial support. We really appreciate you giving your time and making everyone feel so welcome.

And a big thank you to everyone who came along, listened, asked questions and shared their experiences. It was lovely to bring people together in a relaxed setting at Yellowave, with time for a cuppa and a chat.

One attendee described the afternoon as โ€œA very interesting + helpful range of speakers. Thank you!โ€ And we were delighted that everyone who completed a feedback form said they would recommend attending to others.

Helping people find information, support and opportunities to live well through and beyond cancer is an important part of our work at Sussex Cancer Fund. Thank you to everyone who helped make the afternoon possible.

Weโ€™ve come away with some lovely feedback and plenty of ideas for future events, so watch this space!
