Does the thought of needles put you off trying acupuncture?

You might be interested to know that needles aren't the only technique I use.

This is moxibustion, or moxa, a traditional Chinese medicine technique using processed mugwort, which is carefully burned close to the body to provide warmth.

Every treatment is individual. If you’re uncomfortable with needles, we can talk about this and the different techniques that may be appropriate for you.

I offer treatments in Hove (Acquaviva Acupuncture) and at Anahata Multibed Clinic in Kemptown.

If you’re curious but unsure where to start, send me a message.

This September, I’m going back to being a student.

I’m starting a training course in Chinese herbal medicine - something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, and the timing isn’t random. I’ve spent the last few years navigating menopausal and endometriosis symptoms myself, and being on the receiving end of care from Andrew Flower at White Crane genuinely shaped how I want to practice.

So this year I’m learning it properly - the Latin names, the Chinese names, the English names, all three, so I can be certain every prescription is exactly right. (And yes - the herbs really do look like coffee granules, smell a bit funky, and you stir like mad to get them to dissolve. Not glamorous, but really easy for you to prepare.)

I’ll be sharing bits of the training as I go - partly because I think it’s fascinating, and partly because I want you to know exactly who you’re trusting with your care, and why.

Have you noticed the change in the air?

White Dew 白露 Bái Lù marks the subtle shift from late summer towards autumn.
The sunshine can still feel beautifully warm, but mornings, evenings and shady spots are getting cooler.

My simple advice? Layer up.
Enjoy the sunshine, but keep an extra layer nearby and put it back on before you get cold.
Seasonal changes are an important part of Chinese medicine because your body doesn’t exist separately from the environment around you.

Does acupuncture hurt?
It’s usually the first thing people think when they picture a needle going in - “this must hurt.”
Here’s the honest answer: generally, it shouldn’t be painful.

Acupuncture needles are remarkably fine - fine enough that up to 10-20 could fit inside a single standard injection needle. Because they’re so slim, insertion causes minimal disruption to the tissue and is thought to prompt a response in the electrical signal of the fascia.

If anything feels uncomfortable, tell me straight away - I can adjust or remove that needle immediately.

Curious? The best way to find out is to experience it for yourself. Book your first session at the Hove clinic - link in bio.

Most people don’t know this about me before they book in.

Before I was an acupuncturist, I spent years working with bodies and with women in every different way - as a structural integration therapist, working deep into what’s out of alignment. As a yoga teacher specialising in antenatal, postnatal and baby yoga. As a fertility coach, supporting people trying to conceive. And as a doula, present for actual births.

None of that experience disappeared when I trained in classical acupuncture - it still what shapes how I work with every woman who sits in front of me. It’s why I don’t hand out generic protocols. It’s why the whole picture matters to me, not just the presentingcsymptom.

If you’ve felt like a checklist in a ten-minute appointment before, this is a different approach.

When did you last have an appointment where there was time to talk about the whole picture?

Acupuncture treatment at my Hove clinic begins with you as an individual, rather than a standard treatment protocol.

I take time to understand your health history, what has been changing, your cycle where relevant, and what is happening in your life now. Your treatment is then planned individually and may include acupuncture alongside techniques such as moxibustion, shown here.

The treatment room itself is intentionally calm, with a quiet garden view and space to step away from the pace of everyday life for a while.

My clinical practice has a particular focus on women’s health, including menstrual health, perimenopause and menopause, with many women also coming to me alongside their conventional care for conditions such as endometriosis, adenomyosis and cancer.

I’m a member of the British Acupuncture Council and my approach combines Classical Chinese medicine with professional, individualised care.

The heat is officially ending - even if your body hasn’t quite got the memo. 🍂

In the Chinese calendar, we’ve just entered 處暑 (Chù Shǔ) - “End of Heat,” a 15-day window marking the shift out of summer’s peak. On the South Coast this morning, that shift was easy to feel in the cooler air.

It’s also peak harvest time - foragers are reporting bumper blackberry crops after this summer’s heat.

Here’s the seasonal catch: as temperatures start to dip, it’s tempting to soak up every last bit of sun. But the moment you step into shade or the clouds roll in, it’s often cooler than it feels - and that sudden drop is exactly the kind of thing that can catch your body off guard. Keep your arms covered once you’re out of direct sun.

What you do for yourself now genuinely shapes how you move through autumn and winter. This is the time to enjoy the season’s abundance, wrap up as temperatures shift, and give your body the resources it needs heading into the colder months.

If you’d like support moving into the new season, I’m at the clinic in Hove - send me a DM or book via the link in my bio.

Hot flushes suddenly getting worse?

It may be worth looking at some of the everyday things your body now responds to differently.

As we approach menopause, changes in oestrogen can affect several processes in the body, including blood sugar regulation. Many women also notice that things they tolerated well for years, such as alcohol or caffeine, start to affect them differently.

Every woman’s experience of perimenopause and menopause is different. What triggers symptoms for one woman may make very little difference to another.

That’s why I don’t believe in looking at one symptom in isolation.

At my acupuncture clinic in Hove, I take time to understand your wider health picture and use classical acupuncture and Chinese medicine principles to provide individualised support through perimenopause and menopause.

Save this post and use it to start noticing your own patterns over the next couple of weeks.

If you’re looking for menopause acupuncture in Hove, Brighton or the surrounding area, you can book an appointment through the link in my BIO or send me a DM.
