It is a glorious solstice weekend. I hope you have been able to indulge in one of the many circles marking the solstice, your garden, a park or the beach.
Stonehenge, our oldest human structure in the UK was built because it lined up perfectly with the rising sun at the points of the summer and winter solstice. If you live in a city, you may not be aware the sun rises & sets in different places as the year changes.
However, the earliest farmers would have been intimately aware of the location of the rising & setting sun, the changing moon and the implications for planting, harvesting and surviving the winter.
The Summer Solstice and Winter Solstice are the two poles of the year, maximum daylight and minimum daylight. These do not correspond to the times when the days are warmest, which is July/August. This is the light and how it changes, which will be important markers for farming.
These astrological changes were noted and celebrated by pre-Christian Druids in the UK, European wide festivals, Americas, Australasia as well as Asia. These are the markings of the maximum yang and maximum yin of the solar calendar, recognised and honoured with different names around the world.
I have loved learning about the Chinese wheel of the year and yet it has made me more connected with my own culture, the Celtic wheel and humanity as a whole. This is a world wide, ancient experience of the sun traversing the sky and it’s implications for survival: hunting, gathering, farming and sheltering.
The Chinese took this into more detail and have a name for every 15 days in the year, known as a Solar Fortnight. This one is called 夏至 xià zhì summer reach or extreme, meaning the summer is at it’s height with the longest day.
Which feels truer for you right now - overflowing with summer energy, or quietly running on empty? Tell me in the comments.
If your body’s asking to be brought back into rhythm with the season, this is exactly the work I do. Explore acupuncture and women’s-health treatments on my website (link in bio), and save this post as your reminder that living with the cycles, not against them, is always available to you.
