Laparoscopic ovariectomy at Tower Equine Veterinary Surgeons 🙂

This week we had the pleasure of working alongside equine surgeon Safia Barakzai of Equine Surgical Referrals, this time for a laparoscopic ovariectomy.

The procedure was carried out under standing sedation in our clinic and involved the removal of both ovaries using a laparoscope - a thin tube with a camera and light.

Unlike dogs and cats, mares are not routinely neutered, however this procedure is suitable for the removal
of ovarian tumours and may help address dangerous behavioural issues.

This horse referred by Carolyn at Linkswood Equine Vets had developed a large melanoma, rooted deep in his external ear canal. It was causing him a lot of discomfort, with black suppuration and secondary ear infections and was causing him to be very headshy. At the yard, with Archie deeply sedated and the area anaesthetised, I surgically opened the external ear canal to allow excision of the mass. At the end of surgery the canal was reconstructed. The owner reports that Archie is doing great and is back to work, living his best life again!

Our latest paper published today in EVE 🙌🏽🎉, reporting our results from 124 horses after diode laser excision of 218 equine sarcoids: With a median follow up period of 32 months, we had a recurrence rate of only 6.4 % at the site of surgical excision and total recurrence rate including new lesions occurring elsewhere on the horse of 20.5% . The message is that getting sarcoids removed when small and few gives good results in most cases.
