There is a question I sometimes ask clients before a session begins: when did you last fully relax your jaw? Most people pause. Then they realise they're clenching right now.
Under sustained pressure — not crisis, just the ordinary ongoing weight of a demanding life — the body braces. Jaw, shoulders, hips, the deep muscles of the abdomen. This is a protection response, and it is completely logical. The problem is that when held tension becomes a background habit rather than a temporary reaction, the brain interprets it as a signal that the threat is still present. The nervous system stays primed. The feeling of anxiety or unease persists, even when there is objectively nothing wrong. You are not imagining it — your body is maintaining a state based on what it feels in the muscle, not what your thoughts are telling it.
This is why "just relax" is such profoundly useless advice. You cannot consciously release a muscle you have been unconsciously gripping for weeks or months. The instruction reaches a locked door. The recovery and massage programmes within EMA/EMS work on an entirely different principle — passive, rhythmic stimulation that speaks directly to the nervous system, signalling from the outside in that the threat has passed and it is safe to release. It is one of the reasons sessions leave clients feeling deeply rested rather than simply less sore. It is also why the recovery programmes matter just as much as the strength ones — you cannot fully amplify your fitness in a body that never gets to properly decompress.
Tension does not make you stronger. It just makes you tired.
