Practising What We Preach: Our Co-Founders Swap the Office for the Open Water

Two or three times a year, our co-founders Pippa Crouh and Steve Birchall, trade spreadsheets for swim caps and take on a triathlon: swim, bike and run, back to back. Most recently, they completed events abroad, and apparently, they love it.

It's a personal challenge, but it also reflects something we believe in professionally: good health is the foundation of good work.

The evidence backs this up. In July 2026, the UK Chief Medical Officers published refreshed physical activity guidelines, confirming that even small amounts of activity benefit physical and mental health. The CMOs say the benefits steadily increase up to the recommended 150 minutes a week, and that the biggest health gains come from moving from inactivity to any activity at all. The guidance also places renewed emphasis on reducing prolonged sitting and on building strength and balance into everyday life.

You don't need to do a triathlon. A lunchtime walk, taking the stairs or breaking up long periods at a desk all count.

What gets your team moving?

LEV and Dust Control: Seeing Is Believing

Local exhaust ventilation (LEV) is one of the most important controls for airborne dust, fume and vapour, but only when it works as intended. A hood in the wrong place, a damaged duct or a poorly maintained filter can leave workers exposed while giving everyone a false sense of security.

Practical demonstrations are one of the most effective ways to show the difference. Tools such as dust lamps and smoke tracers make it clear how dust escapes capture zones, how operator position affects exposure and why airflow matters.

Under COSHH, LEV must be kept in efficient working order and thoroughly examined and tested, usually at least every 14 months. Daily user checks, clear performance indicators and trained operators all play a part.

Effective dust control also connects directly to health surveillance. Where workers are exposed to respirable crystalline silica, wood dust or flour dust, respiratory surveillance can identify problems early and show where controls are failing. Seeing dust control in action turns compliance from a paperwork exercise into something people understand and act on.

Well Done, Pippa!

Congratulations to Pippa Crouch of Global OHS on her talk at the "Getting Health Surveillance Right: Working Together to Protect Worker Health" conference.

The day brought professionals together for a welcome and scene-setting session, a panel reflection, a focused session on designing compliant and effective occupational health systems, and three afternoon breakout workshops, with plenty of time for networking along the way.

Sharing practical expertise with peers is exactly how standards improve across the sector. Pippa's contribution reflects Global OHS's commitment to getting health surveillance right for every worker.

Designing Compliant and Effective Occupational Health Systems

Many organisations run statutory health surveillance (SHS) because they feel they should, not because a risk assessment tells them to. The result is often a programme that costs too much, covers the wrong people and still leaves gaps.

A prioritised, risk-based approach changes that. It starts with a clear picture of the hazards (noise, vibration, respiratory sensitisers, dusts, skin irritants) and of who is actually exposed and to what degree. Surveillance is then targeted where the law requires it and where it adds real protective value.

Getting there involves three steps:

Review risk assessments so they reflect actual working practices rather than assumptions.
Map exposure groups against the legal triggers in regulations such as COSHH and the Control of Noise at Work Regulations.
Build a schedule, a records system and an escalation route that managers can follow.

The outcome is a system that is defensible to regulators and proportionate in cost. Most importantly, it can detect early signs of ill health before they become lasting harm.

Management Referrals

How can we help?

When work begins to affect an employee’s health, or an employee’s health starts to affect their work, a management referral to Occupational Health provides clarity, structure, and professional guidance.

Management referrals allow employers to access independent, medically informed advice on how best to manage complex situations. Where appropriate, an Occupational Health practitioner will also support the employee by advising on steps they can take to improve or stabilise their health at work.

At Global OHS, our experienced clinicians work with managers to provide clear, practical advice that supports both the employee and the business.

Why Strong Administration Matters in Occupational Health.

Delivering high-quality occupational health services requires more than clinical expertise.

Behind every appointment, referral and report sits an administration team helping to keep the service running smoothly.

At Global OHS, our administration team recently took part in a dedicated Business Administration Excellence training day. The focus was on working smarter together, managing priorities and taking greater ownership of everyday processes.

More Than Just Administration

Occupational health administrators coordinate healthcare services, manage confidential information and often shape a client's first experience of the organisation.

Checking clinic information in advance, identifying missing referral details and monitoring outstanding reports can prevent problems from developing in the first place. Anticipating common client enquiries can also create a smoother experience for everyone involved.

Practical scenarios during the training encouraged the team to consider the wider impact of each enquiry. They looked at what needed immediate attention, what could be scheduled and what could be delegated or redirected.

Strong administration supports the entire occupational health process. By continuing to develop these skills, we can provide a more consistent, organised and responsive service to our clients and their employees.

Flu vaccination update 💉

We wanted to share an important update regarding this year’s flu vaccination programme.

Sanofi has advised us of a nationwide delay affecting supplies of the Vaxigrip flu vaccine. Unfortunately, this is affecting vaccination providers across the UK, including GP surgeries, pharmacies, hospitals and occupational health services.

Our current expected delivery is now the week commencing 9 November 2026, which we appreciate is considerably later than originally planned and may mean some scheduled workplace clinics need to be rearranged.

We know how important flu vaccination programmes are to our clients and their employees, so we are actively exploring alternative vaccine supplies. However, the wider UK market is also experiencing significant disruption, with one manufacturer withdrawing from the UK flu vaccine market this season and additional manufacturing issues affecting available stock.

Flu vaccines are manufactured and ordered many months in advance, which unfortunately means alternative stock is currently very limited.

We are continuing to work closely with suppliers and will bring clinics forward wherever possible if suitable vaccine becomes available sooner.

Although November is later than any of us would have wanted, vaccination will still provide valuable protection throughout the winter flu season.

Thank you to all our clients for your patience and understanding while we navigate circumstances outside of our control. 💙

Supporting the Next Generation of Occupational Health Professionals

Developing the next generation of OH professionals is an important part of building a strong and sustainable service.

At Global OHS, we're delighted that one of our Occupational Health Advisers will begin their occupational health degree in September.

Formal study represents a significant commitment. We're proud to support them as they develop their specialist knowledge and continue building on the practical experience they already bring to the team.

Bringing New Knowledge Into the Workplace

Professional development benefits more than the person undertaking the qualification.

New knowledge can feed directly into team discussions and strengthen clinical practice. It can also contribute to updated guidance and help us continue developing evidence-based occupational health services for our clients.

Occupational health continues to develop as workplaces, legislation, technology and employee needs change. Supporting ongoing education helps ensure our team can respond to those changes with confidence and appropriate clinical knowledge.

Investing in Occupational Health Professionals

Learning doesn't stop when someone completes a qualification or reaches a particular stage in their career.

Continued professional development gives people an opportunity to challenge existing thinking, explore new evidence and share knowledge with colleagues.
